97 years young!

I often get asked what our customer age range is.

The truth is, I don’t think we have one.

Six weeks ago, a gentleman walked into our Seattle store.

We spoke about our work, what we make, and why. He loved the mother daughter story and cause behind ONEOFEACH and The African Academy of Fashion.

A few minutes later, he commissioned a custom piece to wear to a jazz concert at Lincoln Center.

He later told me he was 97 years old. I couldn’t believe it.

In a world driven by trends and noise,
craftsmanship still finds its people.

It reminded me that what we are building is timeless.

No age. No trend cycle. Just intention.

Generations of women across the world – have been masters of craft, culture and community without ever stepping into a lecture hall or defending a PhD thesis.

They built economies from their hands. They created, traded, stitched, dyed, farmed, healed and raised entire generations.

Their knowledge was not written in journals neither was it carried in memory, practice and tradition.

This International Women’s History Month, the theme reminds us to recognise the countless women whose contributions shaped society – often quietly, often without formal recognition.

In the creative industries, craftsmanship is one of the most powerful examples of this.

Behind many of the most beautiful objects we admire are women who learned their skill from a mother (like me), grandmothers (my mother who learnt from her mother) or a community elder. Their classrooms were kitchens, courtyards, markets and workshops. Their credentials were patience, precision and years of practice.

At a time when we speak about innovation and entrepreneurship, we must also honour the women who built entire creative economies long before the word “startup” existed.

Their work reminds us that knowledge does not only live in universities or formal academic institutes.

It also lives in the hands.
