Breastmilk digests faster than formula. For this reason, formula-fed babies do tend to sleep for longer stretches at night than breastfed babies, sometimes, depending on the baby. That said, if youβre considering weaning to formula in an effort to get your baby to sleep through the night, please reconsider. This isnβt a strategy I recommend simply because it is possible to breastfeed your baby AND have them sleep well at night and for naps.
By taking away the reliance on breastfeeding as a soother for sleep, you will make it much more likely that your baby will self settle to sleep which will help them fall back to sleep if they wake during the night.
So, continue breastfeeding your baby but do NOT let them fall asleep while breastfeeding, rather wake them a little and place them into their cot sleepy but awake and aware so they have the chance to learn to self settle to sleep.
