في عام 1912، عُثر على المستكشف الدنماركي إينار ميكلسن بعد أن تقطعت به السبل في جرينلاند لمدة عامين ونصف مع زميله إيفر إيفرسن، الذين كانوا أعضاء في البعثة التي عُرفت باسم بعثة ألاباما.

لقد ظلوا لمدة 865 يوماً عالقين في كوخ صغير، ينتظرون من ينقذهم.

كانت الدنمارك قد أرسلت إينار للعثور على خريطة ومذكرات مفقودة لبعثة سابقة.

كانت تلك البعثة تحاول إثبات أن "مضيق بيري" —وهي منطقة كانت الولايات المتحدة في ذلك الوقت تعتقد أنها ممر مائي يقسم جرينلاند— وكان ليس له وجود في الواقع.

كانت الولايات المتحدة تطالب بجزء من جرينلاند كملك لها، لكن الدنمارك أرادت إثبات أن جرينلاند جزيرة واحدة كبيرة ومتصلة.

ولكن كانت رحلة ميكلسن مليئة بالمشاكل والتعقيدات؛ حيث واجه فريقه تأخيرات عديدة، وفي النهاية، تُرِك إينار وإيفر وحيدين بعد رحيل بقية أفراد طاقمهما.

ومع قلة الطعام،ونفاذ المؤن اضطروا إلى أكل كلاب الزلاجات للبقاء على قيد الحياة.

ورغم ذلك عانوا من جوع شديد،وتخيلوا رؤية حيوانات غير موجودة، بل وتعرضوا لهجمات من الدببة.

في الصورة التي التُقطت لإينار لحظة إنقاذه، يمكنك رؤية صورة معلقة على الحائط خلفه.

كانت تلك الصورة تضم 53 طالبة من مدرسة للاقتصاد المنزلي.

ومن أجل تزجية الوقت في صقيع القطب الشمالي، كان إينار وإيفر يتحدثان عن الفتيات الموجودات في الصورة لدرجة أنهما دخلا في جدال حاد بسببهن.

فقد وصل الأمر بهما إلى تخصيص فتاة لكل منهما كـ "خطيبة" خيالية، ووقع الخلاف بينهما عندما بدأ كل واحد يجادل بأن "فتاته" أجمل أو أكثر أدباً من فتيات الآخر،كانا بالفعل وصلا إلى مرحلة الجنون بسبب العزلة والوحدة والجوع الشديد.

وفي النهاية بعد أن فقدا الأمل ،و استعدا للنهاية بصدر رحب تم إنقاذهما بواسطة سفينة صيد نرويجية مرت بالقرب منهم بالصدفة .

في عام 2022 تم إنتاج فيلم سينمائي بعنوان Against the Ice (ضد الجليد)، وهو مقتبس من كتاب ميكلسن نفسه الذي يحمل اسم
"Two Against the ice".
