Born Into The Fire tells the beginning of Kevyn Wynne’s story — a childhood shaped by poverty, domestic violence, alcoholism and instability.
From the moment I started reading it, I was addicted. It’s one of those books that grips you and makes you want to keep turning the page to find out what happens next.
The way Kevyn sets the scene is what really stood out to me. You don’t just read about the situations he found himself in, you can picture them. You feel like you’re there with him, seeing the environment he grew up in and beginning to understand how those experiences shaped the person he became.
There are moments you can resonate with, even if your own life has looked completely different. The emotions, the struggles, the relationships and the effect your surroundings can have on you are things so many people will be able to relate to in their own way.
Circumstances that could easily have defined the rest of his life.
But where you start doesn’t have to be where you finish.
To us, Refusing to be Average has never meant simply being more successful than the person next to you.
It means refusing to accept the version of yourself that your circumstances tried to create.
Refusing to become a product of your environment.
Refusing to allow your past to dictate your future.
And having the courage to believe that your story can still be rewritten.

On a personal level, I’m incredibly proud to know this man not only for the person he has become, but to call him my cousin.
To have someone within my own family who has faced adversity, owned his journey and continued to push forward is something I’m proud of. He’s become a positive role model and a reminder that your beginnings never have to determine your ending.
This is exactly what Refusing to be Average means to me.
