Look closely at the edge of a good lapel. If the stitching is slightly uneven, that isn’t a mistake.
Those tiny stitches running along the edge are called pick stitching. On a hand-finished jacket, no two land exactly the same distance apart.
That slight irregularity is the signal. A machine spaces every stitch identically. A hand never does. It began as a way to hold the lapel’s layers together near the edge and keep it sitting clean.
Next time you’re looking at a jacket, check the lapel edge. It tells you more than the label does.
