Hi, I know I'm very late late to the game but the last weeks were quite turbulent for my family and me. And somewhere between medical emergencies, a heavy heatwave and plenty of online orders to fulfill there came this small regulation which threatens to kill small businesses.
So, as you may have already noticed in my etsy shop: I currently only ship to certain countries and for now it has to stay this way unfortunately.
The new packaging and packaging waste regulations (ppwr) are a horror for small to medium sized businesses as they make shipping in the EU unneccessary complicated and expensive. Meaning for me that not only is my own business in danger but also some of my suppliers might not ship to Austria in future. (Find millinery supplies locally in Austria? Ha, you wish! 😥 I'd love to but I can't even get the basics such as straw or felt cones, or decent petersham ribbons.)

While reducing packaging waste and making sure that all packaging waste is deposed of correctly is certainly a good idea -this has not been given enough thought.

I'll keep you updated if there are news on this.

King Charles has donated an entire field of wheat from his private Sandringham estate to a hat maker amid a national straw shortage👏🌾.

Milliner Emily Hurst, who crafts high-end women's straw hats, found her business facing major challenges due to a severe national straw shortage. Brutal drought conditions and poor harvests left traditional British wheat varieties like Maris Widgeon—a specialised material prized by traditional hat makers—extremely difficult to source 👒☀️

After training at the King's country retreat of Highgrove through a Chanel and King's Foundation fellowship, Emily mentioned her material supply struggles to the monarch.

Upon hearing about her plight, King Charles immediately stepped in to help by handing over a whole crop field to ensure her craft could continue.

The talented designer expressed her disbelief over the royal generosity during an interview on BBC Radio 4. Reacting to the massive gesture, Emily shared: "We've got a whole field's worth here, I could potentially create hundreds of hats from this. It's quite hard to imagine if I'm honest, it's still quite surreal, it's still sinking in."

Her passion for preserving classic British craftsmanship remains at the heart of her work. Reflecting on her trade, Emily explained: "Straw is an extraordinary and often overlooked material with deep cultural significance and an exciting future in modern fashion. I'm passionate about helping this heritage craft not only survive, but thrive again." 👒

WE HAVE A PROBLEM. Genauer gesagt, alle KleinunternehmerInnen (Ich lasse es mal meine Freundin Ly Celefindel ausdrücken, weil ich leider immer noch sprachlos und etwas ungläubig bin, dass das das Ende sein könnte):
"Wir Kleinunternehmer stehen mit 12. August vor einem Abgrund. Mit der neuen Verpackungslizenz kostet jedes Land in der EU, das wir beliefern wollen, mindestens 300€, ab dem ersten Paket. Für Nischenmärkte wie mich, die auf eine breite Kundschaft in ganz Europa angewiesen ist, bedeutet das zB für Deutschland mind. 7€ mehr Versandkosten für meine Kunden, andere Länder kann ich gar nicht mehr beliefern, weil wer zahlt schon 50-300€ Versand?
Aus Kundensicht bedeutet das auch, dass man sehr viele Artikel gar nicht mehr ins Land bekommt. Für Hobbies wie Reenactment oder Larp ist man oft auf ausländische Unternehmen angewiesen. Und gerade in so einem kleinen Land wie Österreich bekommt man überhaupt fast nichts mehr! Es fördert erst recht wieder die chinesischen Händler und Konzerne, weil die als einziges noch liefern.
Dieses Gesetz wird viele Jobs, Geld, Ideen und Lebenswürfe kosten."
