If you are into swords and/or HEMA, there’s a chance you know this falchion, made by Matt Stagmer for a certain swordosphere YouTuber, after whom it is named The Skallchion. 😉

The Skallchion found its way to Austria as an unexpected return gift to a collector who commissioned me to make a very special scabbard for it. – Not just for adding it to his collection, though, but for an event that honors the spirit of giving back. Sword and scabbard will be raffled off, and one lucky winner will take it. The proceeds will be donated to cover the cost of the aforementioned YouTuber’s ongoing fight against ME/CFS.

Artistically, I had carte blanche, with the exception of the logo that should be tied into the composition. Since the massive blade would ask for a very wide scabbard core anyway, I chose to carve large acanthus leaves and cover the upper and lower portions of the front side with a simple yet effective diaper pattern.

I also want to thank Björn Gísli Gylfason for the expertly (and quickly!) crafted bronze chape! Without Björn, a mighty fine craftsman and true gentleman, who agreed to take on the work on short notice, the whole project would have been even more delayed than it already was. 🙏🏻

Speaking of delays … shout-out to PostNord Danmark whose complete and utter incompetence cost us another week towards the end of the project!👌🏻😉

Old tools are mostly just better, that’s why I restore them as best as I can. After removing plenty of gunk and rust, this adjustable edge creaser is back from the dead.

Before cleaning with a soft wire brush, I couldn’t even make out the maker’s mark – and I was pleasantly surprised to see the running horse of Melzer & Feller appear. I might slightly reshape the tips at some point, but for now, this is perfectly usable and will find its place on my tool wall.

This scabbard for an Albion Munich sword will soon leave me for Warsaw and, hopefully, make a big fan of Albrecht Dürer very happy.

My client asked me to craft a scabbard in the style of the one that Lukas Paumgartner is wearing on the well-known wing panel of Dürer's eponymous altarpiece (Munich, Alte Pinakothek), on which the donor is depicted as Saint Eustache, who is imagined as a contemporary "reisiger", a man-at-arms.

Even though Dürer's mastery of light and shadow does suggest a highly decorated scabbard, the ornament never clears up as you get closer to the painting (been there, done that).

So, I had free hand with the ornament, and that meant doing what I love – diving into contemporary prints and illumination, finding plant shapes I like, and "thinking with my pencil" long enough to become fluent in the style I'm emulating. And I think I managed quite well this time. 😊

Another very interesting detail is the actual construction of the scabbard. Ulrich Lehnart, in his book on clothing and arms of the Dürer period, was IMO one of the first to point out that German and Austrian scabbards of the late 15th and early 16th century were not stitched in the back, but in the front, with the seam forming a natural riser. This will divide the front into two fields lending themselves to meandering floral ornament.

Once you have accepted the idea of stitching in the front, you will begin to see this largely overlooked detail all over the place, be it in paintings or sculpture.

The last addition to the sword was a cross leather, another ubiquitous feature at the time. This project ranks among the absolute highlights of 2026 and I hope more commissions like this are in the cards. I, for one, can only say thank you, Maciej! 🇵🇱✌🏻

Gophers sure do love their underground dwellings, tight tunnels and comfy nests, so the Pocker Gopher model by should feel right at home in its deep-carry pocket sheath.

I didn’t appreciate the Ulticlip much in the past, but I definitely see a few instances now where I might gravitate towards using it.

I had the great pleasure to make a sheath for this D-guard-Bowie by Pearce Richardson of that was entrusted to me by a collector. The blade is a veritable work of art and I hope the sheath makes for a nice home for it to live in.
