After a year and a half of preparation and 6 weeks of intense rehearsals, tonight we open Semele. An incredible team effort of the leading team, cast, workshops and stage crew. Very proud to be part of this talented feather family. Toi toi toi to everyone!

WIDER DAS VERLÖSCHEN. A Wagner project in two episodes. Concept and stage direction: Haitham Assem Tantawy. Set and costume design: Matthias Kronfuss. Dramaturgy: Filippo Romanello. Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe.

It was quite a challenge to mount a Wagner opera on a tricky university stage without stage crew or workshops. As there was no stage machinery available and the space has a very low ceiling, I created a room with a false perspective and a chain curtain that could change from opaque to transparent and gets deconstructed during the evening. Thank you to the brilliant technicians who built this complicated set.

"Die Bühne von Matthias Kronfuß wechselt geschickt zwischen Ferne und Nähe. Mit Spiegelungen und Entspiegelungen, mit Wänden und Öffnungen, mit Videosequenzen trennt er hinten Volksaufmärsche von den persönlichen Seelendramen vorn. [Laurence Dale's] direction was modern in the best sense of the word. [...] He brings us an aesthetically high-quality (the staging was often breathtakingly beautiful) and intelligent direction. [...] There was certainly ingenuity in the way the small stage was given an improbable depth using set and mirrors. The idea of ‘modern’ was rightly searched for in technique, video and lighting.
