True red + pale blue. One of those colour combinations that looks so good together, yet I suspect plenty of wardrobes contain pieces in both without them ever actually meeting. ❤️🩵

That’s one of the things I love about personal styling. Sometimes a fresh outfit idea isn’t about buying something new. It’s about finding new ways to wear the colours and pieces you already own.

True red brings the energy. Pale blue calms it down.

Make red the hero for more impact, let pale blue take the lead for something softer, or use one as the main colour and bring the other in through shoes, a bag or another accessory.

This combination can move easily from relaxed through to polished.

Have a look in your wardrobe. Do you own pieces in both colours? Have you worn them together, or will you now? Tell me in the comments.

Save this for a day when you need a little outfit inspiration.

The sun comes out and spring clothes start looking very persuasive. ☀️

But early spring in Adelaide still brings cold, wet, windy and wonderfully inconsistent weather, so this is definitely not the moment for a complete wardrobe changeover.

It is the perfect time to get smart about wardrobe overlap and trans-seasonal dressing.

On the bright and sunny days, keep the layers you still need, but start shifting the colours. Bring one spring piece back into the mix. Change the finishing touches. A few small changes can make what you’re already wearing look completely different.

And before you start shopping for your spring wardrobe, spend some time working with what you have.

Try new combinations. Revisit the pieces you haven’t seen for a while. Work out what still earns its place and, importantly, what’s actually missing.

Because once you’ve done that, the genuine gaps become much easier to see.

And no, I am absolutely not suggesting we shouldn’t shop. I’m a stylist, not a saint. 😂

I just want the things we buy to add something useful, wearable and worthwhile to the wardrobe we already have.

Same wardrobe. New season. More possibilities.

Save this carousel for the next sunny day when you’re tempted to declare winter officially over. ☀️

And if you’d like some expert eyes on your wardrobe before you start spring shopping, my Savvy Wardrobe Edit is designed to help you work out what’s working, discover new combinations and identify the genuine gaps. Send me a message and I’ll tell you more.

Which of these three changes are you looking forward to making first?

Are you sick of your wardrobe… or just sick of winter?

I ask because by late August, there comes a point where the same coats, knits, boots and winter layers can start to feel a little… boring.

Today in Adelaide it’s 15 degrees, grey and raining, and I suspect I’m not the only one who is very ready for a change.

But this is also the time of year when wardrobe fatigue can easily masquerade as a wardrobe gap.

Spring fashion starts appearing in the stores, we’re craving brighter colours and lighter clothes, and suddenly it can feel as though we need a whole new wardrobe.

Usually, we don’t…

Sometimes we simply need to see what we already own with fresh eyes, bring a few different combinations back into rotation, add a few pops of colour, and start thinking about what we’d genuinely like to add for the season ahead, rather than shopping the minute we get a little sunshine.

Because there’s a big difference between buying something because you’re thoroughly sick of winter… and buying something because it genuinely adds something useful to your wardrobe.

So before you start filling that spring shopping cart, have another look at what you already own.

You may not be sick of your wardrobe at all.

You may just need some sunshine. ☀️

Be honest… which is it for you right now?

I don’t have a corporate wardrobe and a casual wardrobe. I have one wardrobe that knows how to do both.

With Small Business Week on in Adelaide, this was an especially full week of participating in workshops, presenting BRAND YOU to other business owners, attending Meet the Buyer and my monthly SA Leaders meetup, alongside, of course, my usual client work.

So my wardrobe needed to move pretty effortlessly between different settings.

One of the key principles I’ve taught my styling clients for close to 25 years is **overlap**.

I buy suits as part of my Corporate Wardrobe Capsule, but I buy them very strategically. I’m not just asking, “Will I wear this suit?”

I’m asking:

Will the blazer work with denim, dresses and other trousers?

Can I wear the pants with knits, shirts and more relaxed jackets?

Will both pieces work across different parts of my life?

That overlap is what makes a capsule wardrobe so powerful. Instead of owning lots of clothes for lots of separate occasions, you create a wardrobe where the pieces connect and work harder for you.

The most useful wardrobe isn’t the biggest one.

It’s the most adaptable one.

Do your work pieces earn their keep outside work too?

Anyone else completely over winter neutrals?

After what feels like the longest, coldest winter ever and months of neutral dressing, I’m ready for a little colour injection.

Today I chose red… there’s just something about putting on a pop of red that instantly lifts your outfit and your mood. To me, it feels fresh and energising… and gives me hope that some spring sunshine is on its way.

If your winter outfits have started to feel a little flat, you don’t need to change everything. Sometimes one colourful piece is enough to wake the whole outfit up.

It might be as simple as a scarf, belt, handbag or even a bright lipstick. Or you can go big or go home with a colourful blazer or coat.

And yes, I’m fully aware these heels are wildly optimistic for a cold Adelaide weekend. Fortunately, I’ll be indoors, my feet will be warm, and I won’t have to walk too far in them. I don’t call them my 10 percenters for nothing!

What colour are you craving after months of winter dressing?

A statement piece should add possibilities to your wardrobe, not create a styling problem.

Before you buy something, think beyond how much you love it in the moment. What will you wear it with? How many outfits can you see it becoming part of?

The best statement pieces don’t just stand out. They work hard too.

A wardrobe that works isn’t built by random purchases.

It’s built by shopping with a plan.

One of the biggest problems I see in wardrobes is lovely pieces sitting in isolation. A top that only works with one pair of pants. A jacket that always gets worn in exactly the same outfit, with no other uses. A dress you love, but nothing you own layers over it.

That’s when you end up with plenty of clothes, but surprisingly few outfits.

When I’m looking at a wardrobe, I’m thinking about the connections between the pieces. Can that jacket work with jeans, tailored pants, a skirt and a dress? Does that top connect with several of your bottoms? Do your shoes work with the shapes and lengths you actually wear day in, day out?

These are the core principles behind a good capsule wardrobe. It isn’t simply about owning fewer clothes. It’s about choosing pieces that work together and give you the magic of more possibilities.

Try this this weekend: choose one item you like but rarely wear and see if you can style it three different ways using what you already own.

If you can’t, it might just show you the missing link in your wardrobe.

That’s the difference between random shopping and strategic shopping.

Do you own a lot of clothes… but still feel like you don’t have many outfits?

This is one of the most common wardrobe frustrations I see.

It usually isn’t because you need more clothes. It’s because the pieces you own don’t work together easily.

You may have plenty of lovely individual items, but if they don’t connect through colour, shape, lifestyle or styling, you can find yourself in that familiar “wardrobe full of clothes and nothing to wear” situation.

A wardrobe that works isn’t necessarily a large wardrobe.

It’s a wardrobe where the pieces cooperate with one another, suit your real lifestyle, not your fantasy one, and give you plenty of ways to get dressed.

And that takes some planning!

So, be honest…

Do you have a lot of clothes, but not a lot of outfits?

After a long season of beige, red has entered the room.

I’m talking about true, clear, classic red. Energetic, confident and impossible to ignore.

We’re seeing it in beautiful knits, short jackets, small handbags, classic sneakers and flashes of red socks.

I think part of the reason it feels so appealing right now is that we’ve had such a long stretch of head-to-toe neutral dressing. Red brings a burst of energy without asking us to reinvent our entire wardrobe.

For some people, red is a signature. It has always been part of how they express themselves.

Others enjoy it when fashion gives them a beautiful reason to wear it.

Then there are those of us who may never become fully fledged red devotees, but are very happy to flirt with it through small pops, such as a handbag, sneakers, socks or a sheer red lipstick.

I’m in the latter camp, but even I am finding this clear, classic red rather difficult to resist.

Are you a red devotee, red curious, or happily sitting this one out?
