AgriFutures Australia has launched a $2.5 million, five-year research program to boost the Australian h**p sector. The program focuses on four major areas:
• Better h**p seed varieties
• Improved crop production
• New h**p products
• Sustainability research

The initiative — the Australian Industrial H**p Program of Research (AIHPR) — is led by Southern Cross University, which has over 15 years of experience in h**p research. It brings together growers, processors, agronomists, universities, and industry partners nationwide.

The research will tackle key challenges like securing quality h**p varieties, improving processing methods, exploring safe uses in livestock feed, and measuring sustainability benefits.

H**p’s potential is huge:
• Rich in Omega fatty acids and protein
• Strong natural fibre used for clothing
• Can replace single-use plastics
• Used in eco-building materials like h**pcrete

Industry experts say the timing is perfect. The Australian h**p industry is still young but growing fast, expected to reach $10 million nationally by 2026.
