My family. Uncle Dudley, Uncle Geoff, Dad, Neil, Granny and Pa Baker and darling Auntie Doss.

Throwback Thursday had me looking at a family photo in a different light today. This black and white is not only of my grandmother Dorothy Flynn Durack nee Baker and her brothers but of my great grandfather Pa known as AJ Baker and his wife Helen Anne. This year marks 100 years since he commenced AJ Baker refrigeration. Pa was responsible for installing the bubblers / drinking fountains at Loreto Nedlands, Claremont and later at John XXIII College. These bubblers are used many times during the day by not only students but staff as well, who fill their water bottles throughout the day. A great legacy.

Proud grand parents. Wendy and Terry Krummel, Uncle Brendan and Uncle Nigel Congratulations Dec.

Congratulations to 1st XI cricketer Declan Power who took 7-18 in the second innings last week, including a hat trick, helping our team to a rare outright win against Trinity.

Good luck to all teams this weekend against Guildford

Does anyone know.

We need your help, and that of WA's old timers and barflies, to identify this gorgeous 1930s bar, which features in our book celebrating our 2020 Centenary!

We thought this before-and-after might’ve been the RSLWA Anzac House on St George’s Terrace (built in 1934, demolished in 1979) because the second photo almost matches the description in The West Australian of 21 September 1934:
“... equipped with Amatice standard hardware of solid bronze Chrome-plated. The non-leaking chrome-plated beer taps mounted on terrazzo slabs, and set off with stainless steel drip trays, are a most attractive feature.”

… but it says the exterior of the cabinet is finished in polished maple, and the unit in that second photo is not polished maple.

So we’re looking for a bar which already existed in the early 1930s which was replaced by an AJ Baker, Amat-Ice installation a couple of years later. It could have still been in use into the 1950s.

Beginning in the early 1930s, AJ Baker & Sons installed refrigeration in every major hotel in Perth and throughout WA. We realise this bar could be anywhere, but we know - for sure - it’s not the Court, the Palace, the Albion, the Inglewood, the Subi, the Brisbane, the Claremont or the Balmoral.

With your help, we’d love to definitively identify this old bar!
