Salamanca Wool Shop

Salamanca Wool Shop Here you will find things related to wool from designer clothing to knitting needles and every thing I thought I would like to have my own business.

About Salamanca Wool Shp
It is strange how life can deliver you to the places where you need to be and people that you need to meet. The big question was a business doing what? I knew it had to be working with something I believed in and also provide me with some creative outlet. In 2010 we purchased Tasmanian Woollen Co, found at 69 Salamanca Place Battery Point. We have tweaked the name, physica

l space and the content to become the Salamanca Wool Shop. We sell wool and other natural fibres. In our store you will find wool in many forms of clothing and yarn. It can be fine, boiled, felted, knitted, dyed, or blended with other fibres. Sometimes I think the shop has a split personality but it does seem to work. We can help you out on most wool journeys you want to take. You may just want the clothing ready made or a hand crafted piece by a local fibre artisan or you may want to make something out of wool yourself. We we can help you. I love the fact that wool breathes, it can be worn in both summer and winter as an inner and outer layer. That is does not require ironing, it can does not smell, that it is sustainable and has so many amazing properties. Also that I can take a ball of wool or two and create a wonderful garment. We have had our physical shop since September 2010 and in September 2015 we launched our on-line shop.

Paula, pictured in her Melody top down jumper. Paula chose Tweedy by Hedgehog Fibres for tis knit. This is a great DK yarn to work with. It's soft, yet wooly. Not superwash and it blooms beautifully after washing.
11 shades to choose from. Dreaming in Light is now discontinued. Our next shipment is on its way to us from Ireland.

Fibres are
50% Falkland Merino Wool, 37.5% Recycled wool, 12.5% our Thread waste. 230m/100g.

Hedgehog Fibres collect there waste yarn and use it to create the coloured bits in the Tweed DK yarn.

Tomorrow is Worldwide Knit in Public Day. Have you sorted a spot to knit in public. You can do this with a group or just yourself having a quiet coffee.

I am heading to Tricycle tomorrow and will be there from 10.00 till 11.30am. I am hoping to snaffle a table in the front area outside Peacock Theatre, but if I can not the I will be in the back section off the walkway to Kelly's Steps.

Then onto Lindisfarne to the CWA hall and will be joining the Lindisfarne CWA, who are hosting an event from 1:30 till 4:00pm. $5.00 entry and this will get you some light refreshments. I will not be staying till 4.00pm as I am on to the next event.

Next stop is SMOLT where I will join the Bombed Yarns group. They are gathering from 2:00-4.00pm.

Then I take myself home, unless I receive an invite to Dark M**o from my man. To which I will say yes and my knitting will be coming too!

Can not think of anything better than a day of knitting and not looking at the bookwork.

This is the week of self striping sock yarn. Last Thursday I picked up an order from Dizzie Devil. What a delight and exciting delivery. What is in it?

A new self striping colourway for the shop - Edge of the World. Plus new colourways, Ionspheric, Tarkine Twist and Afterthought.

Assigned Pooling yarns, a concept I have been teased by. Initially resisted but have now dived in. Some yarns on the wool wall and a knit on the needles. If you want to know more about this concept then check out our post on our website. It is a dyeing and knitting collaboration like no other.

Finished off the order with some more 8ply sock yarn.

All is out on the shop floor, online at our website and ready for your needles.

We have had fun finding space for Yarns from Alix's new solid/tonal colours, on the Farmland base, to our wool wall. An amazing palette of 60 colours to choose from. We have a selection in 8 and 4 ply.

The yarn is sourced from Yuruga Plains farm in Lodden Victoria, spun on the mainland and then sent to Tassie for Alix to dye, then to us at Salamanca Wool Shop. The yarn is merino non superwash. This means that it will felt if you want it too! It will require hand washing only. Machine washing will cause this yarn to shrink and felt.

I will have to report on the wear of the yarn once my projects in it are a little older.

PS: We have also put an order in for some more of Alix's self striping sock yarn. Currently have completed my Salamanca socks and am working on Kim's. I am the teal toe/heel/cuff and Kim is the Black toe/heel/cuff. Salamanca is only available at our shop, as is the self striping colourway Rose.

Thursday night was pick up from Dizzie Devil, get them out onto the Wool Wall or points of display in store.

So excited to receive a new self striping colourway from Dizzie Devil - Edge of the World. Loved it and even better I was given a sock sample. It may be a while till I can schedule in a knit for this colourway or even the other new colourways from Dizzie Devil. - Ionshperic, Tarkine Twist and Afterthought. All are great self striping colourways.

We also added some Assigned Pooling Yarn in a Merino 50%/Silk 50% . A free pattern will be available from Wednesday on our website. Check out our Assigned Pooling post on the website to discover more about this type of yarn dyeing and then knitting.

And the last part of the order was some 8 ply sock yarn.

All are available either instore or online.
