Debunking pole myths βΌοΈ
βWho wants to start pole, but is too scared to?β - I asked this on a post a few weeks ago and was shocked by just how many people are in that boat. There are oh so many preconceptions about doing pole, most wholly inaccurate. So Iβm here to set the record straight, and hopefully alleviate that anxiety:
β’ You do NOT have to be strong to start. Yup, you can have noodles for arms, zero abs and STILL start pole. Itβs true, to do advanced moves you do need strength, but as with all sports you donβt start with those moves, you slowly build up your strength by doing said sport until you are strong enough! When I started pole Iβd done no exercise for years and was still dealing with awful fatigue. I wasnβt just weak, I was ill. And yes I still started.πͺ
β’ You also do not have to be graceful/coordinated/like to dance. Firstly grace comes with time and practice, but also there are so many different styles of pole. Power pole (strength moves, flips, and crazy tricks), lyrical (the dancey kind), sexy π₯, and many more. You can choose your own go to style and it doesnβt have to involve dancing if you donβt want it to.
β’ Only skinny, young, fit people do pole. Just NO. Pole classes have representatives from all shapes, sizes, ages, etc. Donβt worry, you wonβt stand out in class if you donβt look like a model featured in womenβs health...π€
β’ You have to be confident in teeny tiny shorts and sports bras to start pole. Yeah I see how I can contribute to this myth...π I love my teeny tiny outfits. But I didnβt when I started. For my first class I showed up in baggy shorts about 2 sizes too big that came down to almost my knees, and a huge oversize t-shirt which I refused to remove. And that was fine! Beginner moves generally only require lower leg grip, but more grip gets required as the moves get harder. BUT, so does your confidence. Pole class is such a safe space - I cannot emphasise this enough - that even if you hate your belly/thighs/whatever, you feel that support that comes in a room full of people admiring their bodies for what they can do, rather that what they look like.π
So, who wants to start poleπ€π
