I’m a custom hat maker. Here are five things I ask every customer before we get started.
1. What’s your head size?
A custom hat needs to fit properly. Measure twice. Regret nothing.
2. What shape do you feel most comfortable wearing? Cowboy, fedora, bolero, open crown or something that doesn’t have a name yet.
3. What colours do you usually wear?
The hat should work with your wardrobe, not sit on a shelf looking expensive.
4. What story do you want the hat to tell?
A person, place, animal, memory or something that means more to you than anyone else.
5. How far are you willing to push it?
Clean and understated, or something nobody else in the room could pull off?
