Let's talk about Eco-Ableism and the harm it can cause people.
What is Eco-Ableism?
Eco-ableism is a form of discrimination toward people with physical or mental disabilities through an ecological and environmental lens.
Living an eco lifestyle is a privilege but for some people it’s something not totally accessible or that can cause barriers. This can lead to shaming and discrimination within the eco community.

Criticising and lobbying against infrastructure such as new cement sidewalks due to the fact they are a big CO2 emitter. Stable sidewalks are vital for people with movement disabilities,
people in wheelchairs, the elderly and people with prams.
Sometimes things seem unnecessary but for other people it is vital for accessibility and quality of life. Everyone is important!

Convenience packaged food items may seem wasteful to some people - but these are usually made for people with disabilities. Some people rely on plastic packaged items to survive.

If you don’t understand a product - it is probably not designed for you.

How can we be more inclusive?
- Center and listen to disabled people.
Learn from them so you can identify issues within the eco community.
- Don’t criticise or shame people for their individual choices. Sometimes disabilities are invisible.
- Understand that you may not understand. Some things such as single use plastic products are made for accessibility that we may have never thought about.

The more we learn from each other the more we can become more inclusive and understanding.
Be kind to the earth.
Be kind to each other.

My heart hurts for our city and all of the other areas affected by the flood. This is just down our road in Rocklea. There’s a long road ahead for our neighbours with the clean up and recovery and they are looking for some extra hands and donations.

If you’re local to the area here are some ways to help:
Yeronga State School is collecting food donations for children affected by the flooding. If you’d like to make donations they are collecting Long life milk, Nut free Breakfast bars, Nut free muesli bars and Bread. Items can be dropped between 7:30-3 to the Yeronga Community Centre 26 Devon St.

The Sports club just behind the water in my video are having a working bee on Saturday starting 8am to assist the surrounding houses and looking for donations to feed the crowds. If you would like to help out they have a page with information - Brothers Saint Brendans Junior Rugby League.
