The Fashion Archives Our book, Remotely Fashionable: A Story of Subtropical Style is out now! www.remotelyfashionable.com

Our online publication: www.thefashionarchives.org

Two friends and fashion scholars, Nadia Buick and Madeleine King, started The Fashion Archives in 2012, beginning with thefashionarchives.org - an original online publication about the past and present of fashion and dress in Queensland, Australia. In 2015 we published our first book, Remotely Fashionable: A Story of Subtropical Style. Original, eclectic and occasionally eccentric, Remotely Fashio

nable: A Story of Subtropical Style is a refreshing sartorial history of a place that fashion forgot: Queensland, Australia. This anthology weaves together 150 years of style in the ‘sunshine state’, where flapper frocks were unfashionably long but mid-century beachwear was scandalously brief. Featuring new essays and profiles, richly illustrated with archival images curated from public and private collections, this unique fashion book proves that Paris, London and Milan aren’t the only centres of style. www.remotelyfashionable.com

An interesting take on the 'makeup moment' of our present, where contouring and highlighting (aka 'strobing') have made a serious comeback. We've been thinking about fashion history's seesaws between extreme beauty regimes and the 'natural look'. Is today's movement part of the fashion cycle or something else?

When the pop singer put down her lipstick and eye shadow, she shook up the internet.

We were sad to hear of Soniya Rykiel's passing last week. This is a wonderfully researched insider's account of her important and revolutionary work:

A few years ago, I was hired by Sonia Rykiel (the house, not the woman herself) to research and write about Sonia’s history and legacy. Fung Brands Limited had just bought the majority equity stake in the company and a new designer had been named. The company wanted somebody knowledgeable about fash...

"The Pre-Raphaelites used clothing as a means to question the very position of women in their society; and so the women in their paintings and photographs remain iconic figures of subversion, even today"

A gorgeous piece about early fashion punks the Pre-Raphaelites!
