The Australian made label carries a lot of weight in the local fashion scene, because it’s associated with high quality products that support local jobs.

But Australian-made doesn’t always equate to ethically made. Behind the scenes, outworkers – often invisible and underpaid – play a crucial role in the production of garments that proudly bear the Australian name.

Find out how to identify ethically made clothes when you shop and check out 10 truly ethical, Australian-made brands you will love.

Second life ❤️ It was bittersweet saying goodbye to my beautiful KAMPERETT silk organza wedding dress recently but I’m so stoked that it has made it to its new owner and will be tailored, re-worn and re-loved!

The dress wasn’t in perfect condition. It has dirt stains around the bottom of the dress and needs hemming to remove this. But with this adjustment will be like new.

I can’t wait to see it re-worn for somebody else’s Big Day™️. ❤️

Did you sell your wedding dress? Is it still hanging in your cupboard? Tell me your wedding dress stories 👇

Affordable AND sustainable – that's what we like to see.

ModiBodi's period underwear are now on the shelves at your local Coles.

If you’re not quick to pounce on new products, you may still be yet to dip your toes in the world of sustainable, reusable period underwear. Since hitting the market a few year’s back, the options for period underwear available have expanded rapidly, but the price point has kept a lot of shopper...

Last week, to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the Rana Plaza garment factory collapse, Baptist World Aid released a special report to show what progress has, or has not, been made since the tragedy, particularly on the issue of garment workers’ rights.

The topline statistic, which this masthead reported, was that it would take 75 years for Australia’s largest fashion companies to pay a living wage, which is the term for a salary that covers the necessities of life.

The shortcomings of these reports however, and others like them that rank companies, intentionally or not, along “good” and “bad” lines, sometimes mean fast-fashion brands, whose problematic business models have been well documented, rank higher than Australian companies doing their best to improve.

Ethical fashion reports that rank brands against a small set of criteria don’t show the full picture. But there is also still too much onus on the consumer.

Research from the Australian Fashion Council based on 2018-19 figures, shows the average Australian buys 56 items of clothing a year, including socks and underwear, making us among the biggest purchasers of clothing in the world.

Like millions of other Australians, Kate Hulett made a new year's resolution. Hers is to not buy a single item of clothing in 2023.
