Toad Takeover: From Pest to Purpose
Melbourne Design Week 2026

Opening event

Open Daily 14th-24th May 2026

Toad Takeover reimagines Australia’s most notorious invasive species as a catalyst for bold, regenerative design. Bringing together Melbourne/Naarm makers Lia Tabrah of VERMIN, Simone Agius of simétrie and upholstery designer Kirk Ireland, the exhibition transforms cane toad skin into finely crafted leather goods and contemporary furniture.

Through material displays, process documentation and in-space conversations, Toad Takeover invites audiences to consider how skilled craft can shift ecological damage into enduring, future-focused design solutions.

We are proud to be participating in the Regional University Industry Collaboration (RUIC) Program, a Queensland Government funded and CSIRO delivered initiative that connects SMEs with regional university researchers to drive innovation and solve real-world industry challenges.

Through this program, we have partnered with the University of the Sunshine Coast to explore the use of natural, chemical-free tanning methods to produce ethical cane toad leather while advancing environmental conservation, optimising tanning techniques for durable, high-end fashion materials.

Kirsha Kaechele from commissioned us to make a naturally tanned cane toad leather bow tie for the toad episode (ep 3) of Eat the Invaders produced by hosted by premiering tonight 7th Jan 8:30pm on ABC TV or stream all 6 episodes on 📺

We produced the leather on Thursday Island / Waibene in the Torres Strait and transported it with biosecurity approval (of course!) to superstar Simone from for production of the bow tie. 💥

“Tony Armstrong hits the front lines of the invasive species war and attempts to turn our unwanted ecological trash into desirable culinary dishes.

With the help of scientists, land carers, an artist and a chef from a place known for exploring controversial ideas in art and food: Tasmania’s Museum of Old and New Art (Mona), Tony will explore the impact these invasive species have on our ecology while he endeavors to uncover whether we could be helping to save our environment by eating the invaders.”
