💎Tips On Preparing Your Garden Bed For Spring🌸🌸

✂Cutting Back & Pruning In Your Garden

The first task you'll face is to cut back dead stems. Spring is a great time to cut back any dead materials that you left in place over the winter (dead plant matter is a valuable support system for pollinators and insects!).

If no new growth is coming up through the ground, then cut the dead stems as low as you can go to make it easier for the new growth to come to the surface. If new growth is appearing through the soil, be gentle and cut as close to the new growth as you can, without damaging it.

If the dead stems or old growth have flopped over, gently give the material a tug to remove it. If the material comes out easily, pull as much away from the new growth as possible, allowing the plant to be exposed. Pulling or tugging is recommended for day lilies, hostas, and grasses and is easier than cutting.

Woody perennials such as lavender, artemisa, and russian sage should be pruned in the spring to maximize growth, since they produce new blooms from existing branches. Prune just above the new growth. Other evergreen perennials, such as coral bells, keep their foliage though winter, so just cut the damaged leaves and the plant will start to produce new foliage shortly.

⚒Raking Debris From Your Garden
After cutting and pruning, it’s time to gently rake your garden. As long as the ground isn't frozen or too wet, you can rake off any leaves, branches and debris that may have settled onto your garden soil during winter. If you notice w**ds, this is a great time to w**d your garden before applying compost, fertilizer and mulch.

🤔When To Use Compost, Fertilizer and Mulch in the Spring Garden
Once you have cleaned all the debris and your garden is ready, add a layer of compost. Compost is a great way to feed your plants as they grow throughout the season. After laying compost, apply a granular fertilizer, preferably on a day before a gentle rain. Rain helps break down the fertilizer as it is slowly releasing into the soil.

Use a fertilizer that is either 10-10-10 or 10-15-10. The first number is nitrogen, the second number is phosphorus (phosphate) and the last number is potassium (potash). All three ingredients are essential to the happiness of your plants.

To spread fertilizer, use a conventional spreader or make your own, (an old Parmesan cheese container is an excellent spreader, or a used milk container with holes punched in the bottom). To prevent plant stems and foliage from 'burning', spread the fertilizer around the base of the plants that are appearing, but make sure it doesn't make direct contact with the leaves.

One of the final steps in prepping your perennial gardens, is to add a layer of mulch. If you are planning on adding or dividing your plants, omit this last step until you're ready. If your garden is ready to go, apply 2-3 inches of mulch, such as shredded bark or pine needles. Mulch helps retain water when needed and keep w**ds at a minimum. If you use cedar mulch it is a natural mosquito repellent, something to consider if you live in a woodland or wetland area.

The very last step is, enjoy your garden! Happy Gardening.💛💛

☀️☀️Spring is all about a succession of blooms and mid-September is when wisteria comes to life. Most wisteria you see is the mauve Japanese. Wisteria's fragrant flowers are also available in pink, double mauve, and white.
If you love the sight of a heavily wisteria-clad arbour then having a greater abundance of flowers is important.
In summer, Japanese wisteria may produce long, brown seed pods (about 5-10cm in length).
Dwarf varieties are available which will help contain wayward growth in smaller gardens.
Hurry do not delay any longer. Take it now before SPRING IS COMING!!! 🌺 🌿 ☀ 💐 🌺 🌺

✨Dahlia Companion Plants – Companion Flowers That Complement Dahlia Plants✨

💐There is absolutely nothing like a big bed of dahlia flowers. The blooms come in many colors and sizes, giving any gardener’s taste an outlet. When planning your bed, it’s a good idea to consider what to plant with dahlias. Dahlia companion plants can be the perfect accents to set off the flowers. There are many flowers that complement dahlia and do double duty to prevent pests💕, for example:

🧡NASTURTIUMS are notoriously riotous growers with fiery, colorful blooms and repellent properties. You can even eat the spicy flowers.

💗Dahlia looks gloriously when teamed up with the cheerful blossoms of COSMOS.

🌸🌸🌸Prepping your garden for Spring? Gardening is naturally a sustainable activity, but there are ways to be more environmentally-conscious, from reducing water wastage to creating your own compost heap. Here Sunny☀, co-founder of Sky Gardens PTY LTD, shares her top tips for creating a more eco-friendly garden

✂Cut out pesticides
As sustainable gardening goes, entirely cutting out pesticides is a good place to start; their overuse is one of the factors that has provoked a catastrophic decline of insect populations. This not only affects the animals which feed on them, but also has disastrous consequences for our ecosystems which ultimately supply us with clean air, water and food. Instead try companion planting, a natural method of pest control which involves growing mutually beneficial crops together🪴🪴🪴

🚫Buy peat-free compost
If you buy compost, choose one that is completely peat-free. Peatlands plays a vital role in mitigating climate change and stabilising the carbon cycle through their storage of carbon. Taking hundreds of years to form, they can be destroyed in a matter of days for our use. Alternatives to peat include coir (coconut fibre), wood fibre and other organic matter.

🏦Create a compost heap
If you have more space, creating your own compost heap is a great way to recycle food and other organic waste into a rich and healthy fertiliser for your soil. Repurpose something you already have, or find second-hand, rather than buying a brand-new compost bin. Get creative with reusing old household products in your garden. Try turning cardboard tubes from kitchen roll and pieces of newspaper into biodegradable seedling pots. Simply cut to size and fold over at the bottom, planting them directly into soil.

🌦Buy sustainable furniture
For finishing touches look at investing in more sustainable garden furniture options which divert materials from landfill while creating long-lasting solutions. My garden are made using recycled polyethylene, is a luxury and sustainable addition to any patio.

💡A few more smart swaps and tips

🌳Always choose a hedge over a fence. Not only are you avoiding the emissions and expense, but hedges also create a haven for wildlife and take in greenhouse gases.

💧Try to reduce unnecessary water wastage. Water your plants the correct amount, get a rainwater butt and consider investing in an eco-friendly watering system as opposed to a traditional hosepipe. You can also buy large pots for plants so they don’t dry out as quickly.

🍃Fill your garden with native plants, such as native wildflowers, which are ideal for attracting bees and butterflies and are often more resistant to pests than non-natives.
