🎙️ NEW PHOTO BIZ X INTERVIEW with Benjamin McCoy.

Ben started Good Life Portraits from the back of his car in 2016.

Today, he has seven full-time staff, they’re shooting around 80 portrait sessions a month, and the business is tracking towards $2 million in revenue.

Ben says, for years, he was the bottleneck. Shooting, retouching, managing people and working seven days a week.

Today, he has systems and a team that allow the business to operate without everything depending on him.

The marketing numbers were interesting too…
Around $17 per lead.
About $105 to acquire a client.
Average sale around $2,400.

Interestingly, the $5 and $6 Facebook leads actually gave him worse results because they were often lower quality.

We also get into how he’s now using AI to nurture enquiries and book calls — but still believes getting a prospect onto the phone with a real person is one of the most important parts of making the sale.

🎙️ NEW PHOTO BIZ X INTERVIEW - MONEY IS THE TOPIC.

Lucas ran a successful photography business in Aspen, made good money, and it looked like things were going well.

But he had $25,000 in credit card debt, was behind on taxes, had no real savings and eventually realised he was spending 99.5% of everything he made.

His answer wasn’t more bookings.

He changed what he did with any money after it came in.

Using what he now calls The Big Split (similar to Profit First), Lucas cleared the $25,000 debt in five months and built more than $60,000 in savings in the first year.

We cover irregular income, financial leaks, slow seasons, and why a $5,000 or $10,000 payment isn’t really all yours to spend.

This is a good one if you’re busy, earning decent money, but wondering where it all keeps going.

Gabi Kline Leon is one of those photographers who makes you rethink what a photography business can look like.

Her booking fee is $1,500.

Her average client spend is around $6,000.

The cool part...

Gabi doesn’t really see herself as a photographer. She talks about being a commissioned photo artist, visiting clients in their homes, helping them design artwork for their walls and treating the whole thing more like interior design than simply selling photos.

In this interview, she shares some practical marketing examples...

One magazine (yes, they still exist) partnership generated more than $100,000.

Three mini-session days a month inside a groomer’s business brought in more than $10,000 a month.

And she has some strong thoughts on why pet photographers may be better off paying more attention to Google Business Profile, reviews and fresh content than obsessing over traditional SEO.

There’s a lot in this one about pricing, positioning, sales and attracting better-fit clients without becoming pushy.

Myriam Ménard has built a 17-year wedding photography business without chasing every new marketing tactic.

She’s based in Montreal, photographs weddings across Canada and Europe, and is currently charging around $14,000–$22,000 CAD for Montreal weddings and €12,000+ for European destination weddings.

What I found really interesting is how much of her business now comes back to what she calls offline marketing.

Getting into the right rooms.

Meeting planners, florists and other photographers.

Building real relationships.

And letting other people talk about her rather than constantly talking about herself.

She also has some strong thoughts on curation — not just showing your best photos, but showing the work that actually attracts the clients and jobs you want more of.

There’s a lot in this one around premium pricing, relationships, curation and building a business that actually suits you.

🎙️ NEW PHOTO BIZ X INTERVIEW

Richard I'Anson has spent 40 years making a living as a photographer.

More than 100 countries. All seven continents. 14 books. Years working with Lonely Planet.

The way he has made money has changed over time.

Stock photography once provided Richard with a fantastic income. Today, stock sales return just a few dollars.

He’s tried selling prints too — and despite having an incredible body of work and reputation, he’s very open that print sales have never been a significant part of his business.

The strongest part of his business today?

Photography tours.

Richard believes those tours are largely AI-proof because people aren’t paying him for an image they could potentially generate on a computer.

They’re paying for his experience, knowledge, access, guidance and the chance to travel somewhere incredible and create the photographs themselves.

What about our photography businesses...

If the value is also in the experience, expertise, relationships and what happens around creating those images, we’re building something much harder to replace.

🎧 New PhotoBizX interview out now with Brian Levin

I’ve been wary about having too many AI-focused interviews on PhotoBizX.

There’s already a lot of noise around AI, and I don’t want every second episode turning into another conversation about prompts and automation.

This interview with Brian Levin is different.

Brian is a filmmaker and the founder of Warthog AI, and what he’s doing with AI-generated video is eye-opening.

For photographers in particular, there could be an entirely new line of products here.

We talked about taking still images from a family session and turning them into realistic moving footage.

Not just a slideshow.

Actual video that can make those people move, interact, run into the water, talk to each other and become a short family film.

Could photographers start selling video products created from the photos they’re already shooting?

Brian believes the answer is yes, and the technology is already good enough to make that practical.

The bigger picture is what’s already happening in filmmaking.

Brian shared examples of work that might traditionally have cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and taken weeks to produce, now being created in days for a fraction of the price.

That’s obviously disruptive.

But it could also create opportunities for photographers who already understand light, composition, emotion and storytelling.

Before becoming a full-time photographer, Melody spent more than 20 years working as a 911 dispatcher.

She knows how to stay calm when the person on the other end isn’t.

We talk about difficult client emails, upset parents, disappointed clients, when to pick up the phone, and why telling someone to “calm down” is almost guaranteed to make things worse.

One of the big takeaways for me was how often we start trying to fix a problem that doesn’t actually exist.

Sometimes the client just wants to be heard.

Sometimes they’re missing information.

And sometimes the best thing you can do is step away, take a breath and come back to it later.

A useful interview for anyone who has ever opened an email and immediately felt their blood pressure rise. 😬
