Five years ago, our son Bernie was hit by a taxi while riding his motorbike. At just 16 years old, he lost his left leg above the knee.
Losing his leg wasn't going to stop him achieve his dream.
Bernie never gave up on riding. In fact, he turned his passion into a career. Today he coaches others to ride motorbikes for a living and races both track and dirt bikes.
This weekend, five years later, Bernie competed in the Terra NT TTC – his first major motorcycle competition – and came away with an incredible 2nd place! 🏆🏍️
To make racing possible, Bernie has had to adapt his bike with a hand-operated gear shifter because he can't change gears with his prosthetic leg. He's also fitted a bike cleat to help keep his foot on the peg, although he's still working on finding a more reliable setup.
Watching him back doing what he loves is something words can't really describe. Seeing the smile on his face makes every challenge worthwhile.

Bernie also races dirt bikes and has his sights firmly set on competing in the 2027 Finke Desert Race.
