OCTOPOD CHAIR

New Woodism design.

A wooden chair is widely considered the most complex piece of furniture to design and build because it must blend artistic form, strict ergonomics, and high structural engineering to support a dynamic human body while being made of a rigid, natural material.

Unlike tables or cabinets, which typically have 90-degree angles and static loads, chairs require intricate, angled joinery, complex curves, and must withstand significant, repetitive stress.

Humans are instinctively sensitive to chair proportions; if the seat height, width, or depth is off by even a few millimetres, the user will immediately feel uncomfortable.

For a human being, a curved wooden chair design transcends its functional purpose as seating, representing a harmonious blend of emotional comfort, biological alignment, and an innate connection to nature. It acts as a bridge between the rigid, often angular, built environment and the organic, flowing forms of the natural world, promoting a sense of well-being, calmness, and safety.

Antique Georgian-Style Oak Chest-on-Chest.

This 18th-century Georgian oak chest is a testament to exquisite craftsmanship. The beautifully figured oak, brass handles, and escutcheons add to its allure.

The tallboy or chest-on-chest was a popular piece of furniture throughout the 18th century, first appearing in the late Queen Anne period (c. 1710).
The development of the tallboy coincided with the creation of the bracket foot.
This extreme versatility, offering a large amount of storage space on a small amount of floor space, has ensured the enduring popularity of this design.

Restoring this Georgian oak chest was no small feat. The project required a meticulous approach, involving the complete rebuilding of the two chests to preserve their original beauty and functionality.

Three hundred years of age, neglect, and the harsh Australian climate had left their mark on this chest. The carcasses were warped up to 4 cm and shrunk over 2 cm on all sides.

During the restoration process, a delightful surprise awaited. While cleaning the top section with conch shell inlays, I discovered a very fainted turquoise backdrop colour, a hidden gem that I was able to restore and preserve.

The dragging on the floor of these hefty pieces destroys the legs, so I added castor wheels to prevent that from happening again.

Material: English oak, cedar wood and brass handles.
Dimensions: 200 X 113 X 54 cm

Banksia Grandis, more commonly known as Bull Banksia or Giant Banksia, is a prolific and distinctive Banksia tree found only in the southwest of Western Australia.
This is one of the world’s biggest, rarest and most sought-after Banksia pods.
This distinctive native tree grows particularly large at a height of 5 - 15 metres.
The large cylindrical yellow flowers and the mature wooden nuts reach up to 35 cm in length and 12 cm in diameter.
It takes 24 months from the time the tree produces the flower to the time the Banksia nut reaches maturity and is suitable for picking.
The fact that the tree re-grows its pods every year makes the Banksia an incredibly renewable resource.

The Banksia takes its name from Sir Joseph Banks, the botanist who was on Captain Cook’s ship “Endeavour”, the first European ship to reach the east coast of Australia in 1770.

Pendants: Banksia Grandis slice and tinted resin.
Dimension: 10cm diameter

‘Sculptural furniture’ is a furniture style that serves an aesthetic purpose in addition to just a practical purpose.
It brings plasticity deeper into a living space and gives the chance to touch and to interact with our senses creating a sensory space.

‘Sculpture’ is a mass extending into space inviting us to walk around and view it from several positions.

‘Plasticity’ in architecture, as in art, it is the quality of a work to freely articulate in space.

‘Tactility’ defines any physical interaction with an object through the sense of touch.

‘Sensory space’ is when the space around an object is more sensory rather than empty.
Despite its invisibility, sensory space, like the wind, is felt.

Hallway design’ realised in Perth, WA.

Red - like yellow and orange, is considered an ‘advancing’ colour. Such colours tend to grab our attention and create the illusion that an object is closer or larger.

Antique white - all the wooden elements have been restored and painted in ‘antique white’ to unify and blend them together not just in form.

Fluted legs - modelled after Greek columns, fluted legs are a series of rounded channels or grooves carved into a straight leg. Very popular in Neoclassical styles.

Roundness - square shapes tend to embody strength while curves and rounded shapes evoke softness.

The light sets the mood of the space.
