This whole year Billie’s been down about not getting a job.
Everywhere wanted someone with more experience than working for your mum. It felt impossible. I just told her to focus on school and something will come.
I even had a really hard time finding her somewhere to get work experience.
The school had very specific guidelines and nobody was interested. We had a few call backs but nothing, then someone agreed to having her only to pull out last minute.
As a small business owner I could understand- I suppose having to teach or guide some uninterested kid for the week could seem annoying.
But having spent so many years in salons… work experience kids to me are a no brainer, I love teenagers.. and let’s face it, they’re free.
That place pulled out on a Friday and if she didn’t have somewhere by Monday she was going to have to do it at the school, which she believed she wouldn’t survive.
So I jumped on my local community group and pleaded with any business owners out there.
The thing is that if you knew Billie you wouldn’t think twice - but who’s not going to say that about their own kid.
The local fb response was actually very kind and one woman casually commented mentioning that she co owned the coolest vintage shop in Fremantle and a warehouse (that would fit with the schools regulations)
Billie and I were in Fremantle the next day, the shop was shut but I pointed it out to her and she couldn’t believe it this was it, she was so excited I took this pic of her.
When she came home from her first day she told me everything about these 2 Queens that own the shop, she just loved them.
“And mum, they had no idea who you were, (my private fb doesn’t say my name) I thought all millennials in Fremantle were my online aunties/mums spies.. but not these Queens. I love them and ones a bit more hippie then you and ones a little bit hippie then you, so I felt completely at home”
The two weeks flew past, she learnt so much, (even taught me so much about sourcing vintage ect) I went in to meet them. You know how sometimes you meet women and you instantly know, there is a warmth to them that tells you you’re with a Queen. That was these two.
Which was cool considering shops this epic are often owned by scensta’s who only talk to the cool kids in their cliche (of c**s.)
And at the end of the two weeks, I received a text telling me how much they absolutely love Billie and asking if they could offer her a weekend/holidays job. (😱)
So Billie has officially gone from getting rejected by every supermarket, cafe, office works ect ect, for having no experience..
To her dream job, in a vintage shop, she leaves for work on Sat mornings with a spring in her step and she got home last Saturday arvo, opened the door and said to me and Denim,
“I’m such a vibe right now guys”
And we can’t disagree 🤷🏽♀️
So if you love Vintage and are in freo and want to meet some Queens (including Billie if it’s a a Saturday) swing past and Vintage on High 🫶🏽
It’s a nice reminder that there are people out there who like young people and want to give them a chance.
