It’s Easter school holidays and school break means more daytime outings!  🐇 🐰

Chocolate doesn’t do well in the sun and neither does delicate infant skin 🍫 ☀️

🌸 It’s easy to keep our children sun safe this Easter break 🌸

👕 Slipping on a shirt that covers shoulders or as much exposed skin as possible.

🧴 Slopping on minimum SPF 30+ Broad Spectrum sunscreen with active ingredient Zinc Oxide at least 20 minutes before exposure.

👒 Slap on a broadbrimmed or legionnaire hat to protect scalp, face, ears, neck and shoulders.

🌳 Always seek shade, but be aware that up to 25% of UV bounces off surfaces such as sand, concrete, walls, windows, water, etc.  Babies are so vulnerable they can get sunburn in shade from rebound UV.

🕶 Slide on wrap around UV protection sunglasses. UV can enter through the sides which can lead to cataracts, astigmatism, macular degeneration and other ocular diseases.

Australia has one of the highest skin cancer ratings in the world, but skin cancer is entirely preventable. Sun safety is an important life habit like good manners and personal hygiene 😎

☝️Teach your children to practise sun protection measures EVERYDAY, especially in Australia when our UV index levels are above 3 even in Autumn and Winter months.

Stay Sun Safe this Easter!🪺🐣🌞

To all emergency services, BOM, government authorities, police force, ADF, health services, Energex, and volunteers who have been working tirelessly for the last couple of weeks to keep Australians informed and safe before, during and after Cyclone Alfred, 🙏 Thank you 🙏

Your early warnings gave us ample time to prepare, protect and provide for our home and our young children.

Times like these, just knowing that your loved ones are safe is all that matters.

As the first cyclone that has come to SEQ in over 50 years, I feel confident to say that my family has never been safer, living in Gold Coast, QLD.

☀️💚💛☀️ Australia is known for sweltering summer conditions. UV index levels reaches as high as 16 in the northern parts of the country. That’s considered EXTREME, with government health authorities warning the public to stay indoors during midday hours (9am-4pm).

🏖️ Instead of heeding these warnings, most flock to our famous golden shores or splash in the pool in an attempt to cool off. It’s a lifestyle! A lifestyle that is envied from other parts of the world, but it comes at a cost.

🧴Without adequate sun safety measures ( ), this popular Aussie pass time contributes greatly towards our chart topping skin cancer numbers.

🧸 For those with small children, the harm from UV rays goes even deeper (SKIN DEEP FOR THAT MATTER). Avoiding extreme UV index in the early years can make all the difference in taking Australia off the top of the skin cancer charts.

🌱 It can take just the smallest changes. Just as you would nurture your young for a brighter future, keeping them out of the harsh Australian sun can prevent skin cancer in later life (2 in 3 Australians are diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70 - )

💭 Consider late afternoon beach/pool visits to minimise your child’s exposure to the intense midday UV levels. Going at 2pm can still give you 4-6 hours of beach time fun without the UV danger 🫶 even better if you can share that golden sunset together 🌅 💕

We teach our children to look left and right before crossing the road. We teach our children about stranger danger. We teach our children what foods to avoid if they have allergies. We teach them to stay SAFE.

Sadly, many overlook sun safety when it comes to teaching children about things that can hurt them. 2 out of 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70. We should teach our children to be SUN SAFE, and it’s as easy as making simple changes in you and your child's routine.

👕 WEAR CLOTHING FOR PROTECTION, NOT FASHION
Lightweight and loose fitting clothes that covers as much skin as possible will keep your child cool by allowing air to flow through the layers whilst protecting their skin from harmful UV rays.

😎 ENCOURAGE HATS AND SUNGLASSES EVERYDAY
Not only is the head and shoulders the most common areas to develop skin cancer, ocular diseases such as astigmatism and macular degeneration can be delayed or prevented as much as cancer of the skin.

🧴USE SUNSCREEN CORRECTLY
It takes sunscreen ingredients approx 15-20min to form the protective barrier on your skin. Don’t wait until you’re already feeling your skin burn! And once is not enough. Periodic reapplication is imperative for maximum protection.

🏫 SUN SAFETY IS EDUCATION
With an average of 190 school days per year and children as young as 4.5 years old attending school, a lot can be done during school hours (which is also when UV levels are highest). Apply sunscreen before leaving for school, remember their school hat, and remind to play in shade.

📚🏫 Your child’s school life spans over 2600 days over 13 years, from the age of as young as 4.5 years old up to 18 years old, which falls within the age window when 50% of a person’s lifetime UV damage is received - Cancer Council Australia

⚠️ This makes sun safety during school hours something to be taken very seriously.

🧢 Most schools enforce a ‘No Hat, No Play’ rule, but not much else is done by our schools to ensure that students learn the vital life skills of sun safety:
👎 Students are not encouraged to play in shade during breaks
👎 Students are not advised to use sunscreen except on major events or annual swimming lessons
👎 Outdoor school events like Cross Country and Sports Carnival are organised in Autumn or Spring months when UV index can reach a VERY HIGH 9 and above.

👩‍🏫 However, parents shouldn’t rely on schools and teachers to teach the future generation about sun safety, just as we can’t expect the school to remind our children to brush their teeth everyday. After all, we are our children’s first teachers 🍎

☀️ Sun safe tips for school:
✏️ Apply sunscreen every morning before leaving for school
✏️ Remind your child to play in shade everyday by asking them what they should do when it’s hot and sunny
✏️ Include a roll-on sunscreen in the school bag. Roll-ons are easier for children to apply themselves.
✏️ Praise them for remembering to be sun safe
✏️ Be consistent, not persistent. This will help your child build the habit of independent sun safe practises.
✏️ Don’t forget to lead by example and look after your own sun safety

All the best who have children starting school or returning to school this week! 🌺🫶

☀️ DIRECTIONAL SHADING is about protecting babies and young children from harmful UV rays in the pram without compromising their safety.

By shading the length of the pram/capsule/carseat opening and leaving either side open for airflow, this ensures that direct and rebound sun exposure is minimised, and so too are the chances of developing skin cancer in later life. This is known as DIRECTIONAL SHADING.

☂ HOW TO PROVIDE DIRECTIONAL SHADING
Using a muslin cloth, light blanket or directional shading pram shade, cover the pram opening and leave a large gap on 1 or 2 sides to allow cross flow ventilation. Be sure to open all available pram vents and use a pram fan to increase air circulation inside.

BENEFITS OF DIRECTIONAL SHADING:
✔️Shading for direct sun
✔️Protection from rebound UV
✔️Reduces the risks of skin cancer
✔️Allows carer to maintain visual of the child
✔️Eliminates risks of trapping heat
✔️Reduces risks of SIDS during pram naps
✔️Baby remains calm with parent in sight

The best sun safety approach is to observe all UV protection measures by

Just 4 more sleeps left until Christmas Day 🎅🎁!! I have a special present for all the Aussie parents with babies and school age kids!

❤️ THE GIFT OF SUN SAFETY ❤️
A categorised list of SUN SAFE activities for you to do with you and your family these summer holidays🌞

Just remember:
🎄 Make sure you check hose water temperatures before backyard water play
🎄 Always time outdoor activities after 3pm when UV levels start to decline, or find a spot with lots of shade.

☀️ Of course it wouldn’t be summer holidays without spending some time outdoors, so here are some valuable tips for responsible fun in the sun:
👉 Avoid midday outings when UV index is above 3 (8am to 4pm in warmer months)
👉 Invest in a UPF rated beach tent with walls and mesh windows to protect your child from direct and rebound UV.
👉 Normalise using an umbrella for shade from the sun.
👉 Cover as much exposed skin as possible, even when in shade.
👉 Choose hats that cover ears, neck and shoulders.
👉 Wear UV sunnies to protect curious baby eyes.
👉 Wear sunscreen 20min BEFORE exposure, and reapply every 2 hours. Use physical sunscreen (active ingredient Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide) for sensitive skin.

QUESTION FOR PARENTS 💭 Everytime you wear sunglasses, whether you’re going for a pram stroll or driving, do you put sunglasses on for your child as well?

Squinting, frowning or narrowing of eyes is a natural reaction for eye protection. Many parents wear sunglasses when they’re outdoors with their children, but their children don’t usually wear them too. It’s commonly overlooked 👀 (considering the endless list of things we have to do to keep our babies safe).

Baby eyes are incredibly vulnerable to UV damage. This is because their pupils are larger and the lens inside is clearer, which allows more UV light to be absorbed. ‘Old age’ eye diseases like astigmatism, cataracts and macular degeneration can be directly linked to UV exposure.

All of which can be prevented. The protection is needed most in the early years when they are most vulnerable.

The next time you’re out with your child, have a look at their eyes. Do they look protected?

🙅🏻‍♀️ Did you know, there are NO MANDATORY STANDARDS when it comes to pram covers? This means pram companies that sell rain covers for your pram may be selling you something built for purpose but NOT BUILT FOR SAFETY.

🌧️ There are (misleading) warnings for covering prams with a muslin cloth (read our blog on Varied Pram Covering Temperature Test ) but what about rain covers that are designed to be waterproof, and how do these keep your pram ventilated?

🤔 A muslin cloth, blanket or well ventilated (safety tested) pram shade has more inherent air permeable qualities, making it safer to use for rain cover than a piece of PVC that traps air and heat. A PVC rain cover would only make sense when there is a downpour, but any sensible childminder would immediately seek shelter from the deluge.

Remember that just because it’s for sale, doesn’t make it safe.

⛱ Most infant sunburns occur when the parent is doing what they believe to be the right thing – keeping their baby in shade. This is because sunburn is caused by solar UV rays which reach you and your baby in both overcast days and under shade, by REBOUNDING OFF SURFACES:

⚠️ Health authorities advise parents to keep babies under 12 months old out of direct sunlight, which can lead parents to a false sense of sun safety, because the same health authorities also advise against using sunscreen for babies under 6 months old. So, armed with ‘expert advice’, a parent can spend a day at the beach with their small baby, believing they’re safe without sunscreen in a tent or under an umbrella/cabana.

“Just one blistering sunburn in childhood or adolescence more than doubles a person's chances of developing melanoma later in life.” -

How do you get sunburn without being under direct sunlight? It’s all in the UV.
🔆 90% can pe*****te through clouds
🔆 80% reflects off snow
🔆 25% reflects off sea foam
🔆 22% reflects off white walls
🔆 20% reflects off dry beach sand
🔆 12% reflects off concrete and footpath
🔆 8% reflects off water (with 40% pe*******on to a depth of 50cm)
🔆 6% reflects off soil
🔆 5% reflects off the lawn

🌞 TIPS for responsible fun in the sun:
👉 Avoid midday outings when UV index is above 3 (8am to 4pm in warmer months)
👉 Invest in a UPF rated beach tent with walls and mesh windows to protect your child from direct and rebound UV.
👉 Normalise using an umbrella for shade from the sun (that’s why you can get umbrellas with UPF rating!)
👉 Cover as much exposed skin as possible, even when in shade.
👉 Choose hats that cover ears, neck and shoulders.
👉 Wear UV sunnies to protect curious baby eyes.
👉 If you choose to use sunscreen for bubs, apply 20min BEFORE exposure. Use physical sunscreen (active ingredient Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide) for sensitive skin.

🤔 Did you know...
Infant skin is only 1/5 thickness compared to an adult’s?

👶 Baby skin is so thin you can actually see their veins and capillaries. What you can’t see is the developing process of the skin in the first year of life. For example:
🧸Milia from blocked (underdeveloped) sweat glands
🧸Cradle cap and baby acne from residual maternal hormones
🧸Peeling or flaky skin due to lack of ceramide (ceramide locks in fluid retention), and most importantly,
🧸ABSENCE OF MELANIN - the body’s natural barrier to UV rays.

☀️ So what does this mean when they are exposed to UV?

⚠️ First of all, UV damage is irreversible and cumulative. It is one of the dangers that only manifests when it is too late in later life as skin cancer.

Cancer Council Australia states that every year, skin cancer accounts for around 80% of newly diagnosed cancers, and that the majority of these cases are due to prolonged or unprotected exposure to the sun. It is also reported that 50% of a person’s lifetime UV exposure is received in the first 18 years of life.

😯 In other words... it is PREVENTABLE, and half of a person’s lifetime of UV damage occurred when the person was still a CHILD.

So what can you do for your baby’s sun safety?

☂ Always seek shade
☂ Avoid outdoors during hottest part of the day (between 8am and 4pm depending where you are and the time of year)
☂ Dress bub in loose clothing that covers as much skin as possible
☂ Use a wide brimmed hat and sun glasses, and use sun screen for babies above 6 months (don’t forget to reapply according to the instructions on the bottle)
☂ observe sun safety measures for older babies and young children (they’re not going to do it themselves)
☂ lead by example and promote a sun safe lifestyle (monkey see, monkey do!)
☂️ Stay sunsafe EVERYDAY 😎

Many parents are worried about covering their prams because of overheating concerns, but direct sunlight isn’t the only thing that contributes towards a warm pram.

🥵 Babies and young children have a higher average body temperature due to being more metabolically active. They also sweat less, which is the body's way to release heat and keep cool.
🥵 The pram chassis and fabric can get warm after sun exposure, due to the materials used in manufacturing: Polyester/nylon material, recycled plastic, aluminium frame, etc.
🥵 9 out of 10 prams are either black or dark grey which absorbs and retain heat.
🥵 The road and footpath can heat up to 78°C and retain heat for several hours. Hot air rises and can get trapped under an extended pram canopy/hood.
🥵 Infant inserts and padding on 5-point harnesses are for safety and comfort, but is situated over the child's head, chest, tummy and crotch area (the hot areas).
🥵 A napping baby can be left ‘cocooned’ in the pram for 30-60+ min, which leads to a gradual rise in body heat and pram temperature.
🥵 Babies and young children cannot regulate their body temperatures until around 18 months of age. This means they can gain heat (and lose heat) rapidly.

🌞📈 We need to address the very real danger of UV exposure which increases the risk of skin cancer in later life. The safest way to keep bubs protected from the heat and the sun:

👉Use DIRECTIONAL SHADING methods (partial cover of your pram by the direction of the sun only)
👉Take a route with more natural shade
👉Open all pram vents to increase air flow
👉Use a pram fan
👉Remove unnecessary layers
👉Cover exposed skin with light material
👉Always seek shade and avoid outdoors during the hottest part of the day
👉Regularly check baby and give extra age appropriate fluids

How Bub2Tot 8in1 was Born

The concept behind Bub2Tot 8in1 began in November 2016, at the Gold Coast Coolangatta Airport. The parents’ room was occupied and my first born was HANGRY. I was trying to nurse my then 16 week old daughter on a bench in front of Arrivals, and was embarrassingly aware of her pulling and kicking at the blanket I had thrown over ourselves for cover. I wanted to be able to feed her anywhere and anytime but that moment made me wish for the peace of mind that my baby is fed instead of the anxiety of exposing myself to random tourists.

I started to brainstorm, not knowing that my idea would evolve and give me peace of mind in not just public nursing, but in UV protection, napping whilst out and about, protect from light weather elements and insects, and appease my obsession with wiping every surface down before it touched my baby’s precious and perfect skin!

I am lucky to be extremely competent at sewing, thanks to my mother who put a roof over our heads and food on the table using her lifelong talent and superhuman sewing skills. Bub2Tot 8in1 was refined and perfected over 3 and a half years with more than 6 versions made, each improving vastly from the last. Every part of the design from concept to creation is for my darling daughter.

The product name Bub2Tot 8in1 is pretty self-explanatory - a product that can be used from birth to toddler years and has up to 8 functions thus eliminating the need to purchase 8 single use products.
