“Our shop has become a victim of the flooding. We have no idea when we'll be able to reopen, but we do know we'll get through.”
These are the heartfelt words shared by Amber Po***ck, owner of I Love Boutique, in early 2025 after her town of Ingham was hit by 600 millimetres of rain in just 24 hours.
“Our entire store was inundated. The flood left us with little that could be saved.”
But amid the chaos, the people of Ingham came together. “If it wasn't for the support of our community, I would have closed the doors for good."
However, Amber was still facing significant damage to her store and was unsure how to move forward. She found guidance through wellness and financial coaches funded by the Queensland and Australian Governments.
“My coaches Charlotte and Andrew played a huge role in helping me navigate one of the hardest periods of my life. I knew in my head what I had to do, but my heart didn’t want to leave.”
With support from Small Business Hub and Rural Financial Counselling, Amber made the tough decision to relocate her shop. It wasn’t easy, she lost five weeks of trade and had to navigate complicated insurance claims, but today I Love Boutique is thriving.
“When we reopened in our new location I was overwhelmed by the love we received. It was a reminder we weren't facing this alone.”
The experience has taught Amber valuable lessons about the strength of her hometown Ingham. “We’re a resilient place and we definitely bounce back.”
To other small business owners, Amber's biggest piece of advice is, “You can never be too prepared. Take the time to understand your insurance policy and read the fine print before a disaster happens.
“Asking for help isn't a sign of weakness, it's one of the best decisions you can make.”
