General message from 1UPMYKICKS.
For those who have requested reglues or have reglues in progress we have an issue with the glue. I have spoken with those concerned initially about the heat being an issue. Turns out the issue is far worse. The glue I purchased has been marked as bad-batch. As someone who works in the supply industry. Bad-batch means it does not fulfill its function and must be returned. We currently have 4 pallets of flooring nails that have been incorrectly manufactured, so I understand the process.
This batch of glue had a compromised bonding agent. When contact cement is applied it has two parts, a liquid solvent and a bonding agent. When applied, the solvent acts as a carrier to spread the bonding agent into every part of the surface being applied. It then evaporates leaving the bonding agent to begin the process of forming a chemical bond with that surface. Before bringing the surfaces together to create strong adhesion, both are heated to reactivate the tack. Unfortunately, the bond is not holding. I have tested 4 of the 10 containers I purchased, all with the same lot number. None of them have worked.
The company who I purchased from has agreed to pay for the return shipping and will resupply me in 4 weeks, as they have stock coming via ship from Germany. Turns out I am not the only one with this issue.
I will look locally for contact cement to do what needs to be done. Hopefully a clear cement.
This is the first real snag I have experienced in this business. I will be looking at other glue options, including extensive testing to have other options.
