Finally a bride who takes the prize for the most patient, understanding client I have worked with!! Exactly one week before her wedding with her gown in several pieces on my cutting table I was admitted to hospital with a very severe diverticulitis flare. The Wallaroo hospital emergency room doctor was adamant that I needed to be flown out to the RAH as I was very sick. I had other ideas!! I convinced him to pump me full of antibiotics and morphine for a few days as "I have a bride with no dress and a wedding to go to" !!
I recovered sufficiently to be released 3 days before the wedding and after a few sleepless nights adding sleeves to a strapless dress, hand stitching lace to the sleeves and bodice and reworking the back into a lace up/corset, I delivered Mel's dress at 9:30 am the morning of her wedding!!!

From Meagans wedding dress I also made special pocket squares for Joel and Ryder and for their brides a small scrap of Meagans dress secured with a crystal heart sewn into the lining of their wedding gowns.
Their younger brother Max has his pocket square and a small scrap for his future bride tucked away in a box for their special day too!

Next up was Joel's brother Ryder who married his high school sweetheart Alicia. Once again I was pleased to be able to take on the alterations of Alicia's wedding gown but also Everly and Kaylee got to wear their beautiful dresses again. I removed the lace and coloured sash from Joel and Beck's wedding and added embroidered roses to match Alicia's dress and big fluffy tulle bows on the back. The folded fabric roses originally decorated Meagans dress.

My beautiful friend Meagan, who I had known since I was 16, passed away a few years ago. I miss her terribly but I have had the privilege of seeing her 3 boys grow into the most amazing men that she would be so proud of.
Joel the eldest married Beck in October and I was pleased to handle the alterations of the bride and bridesmaids dresses. I was then asked to make the flowergirls (Meagans grand daughters) dresses from Meagans wedding gown. It was heart breaking, uplifting, exciting and fun in equal measures and an experience I will always remember to create these little dresses.

I haven't posted on here for quite awhile because I have spent the better part of the last 4 years battling horrible health issues!!

I am now well and truly on the mend and ready to get back to my sewing machine!

It hasn't all been doctors visits and hospitals though so here is a look at some of the beautiful dresses I have had the pleasure of working on recently!!

1st up is another of my beautiful hockey friends Amelia. Alterations on her wedding gown included some fit adjustments to the skirt, adding some buttons, bustling and taking up the sleeves which involved a lot of unpicking sequins and delicate hand stitching on the sleeve hem and replacing the sequins. A lovely way to fill in an afternoon or 2!!

When one door closes another one opens!!

My last official day at TAFESA!!
I Will miss all my wonderful, generous, supportive colleagues in Kadina and Adelaide city.

I have loved meeting, teaching and getting to know many, many students over the last 7 years and watching them discover the amazing world of fashion, uncovering their hidden talents and nurturing their unique creativity!!

I am looking forward to taking time for myself to heal and discover my new fabulous (almost) 50 year old self. I can't wait to get back to my first love of dressmaking and designing.

I am also very excited to be able to offer classes in every single facet of fashion design, pattern making, garment construction and everything in between at a "Lisa Slabskyj Fashion School" near you soon!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of watching Mary and Tony commit themselves to each other in a beautiful ceremony full of love!!
Mary had purchased a beautiful saree while on one of her many trips overseas with Tony and she brought it to me to be turned into an outfit for their commitment ceremony. I wanted to design a dress that would make Mary feel beautiful and comfortable while also reflecting her Greek cypriot heritage!! The amazing cobalt blue Georgette and gold embroidery bringing to mind the colours of the Greek island and incorporating movement and softness in the flowing skirt and drape reminiscent of ancient Greek dress. Tony is of Dutch heritage and so after research into Cypriot and Dutch wedding traditions I was able to incorporate some symbols into the dress to represent both sides. A small red bead to represent the red scarf used in traditional Cypriot weddings and 3 little crystals and a leaf to represent lily of the valley which Dutch couples plant around their home to represent the return and renewal of love each year when the flowers appear.
It is wonderful to be asked to create a gown that has such meaning and value to a couple and their families. It was a special privilege.

Reworked the bodice extensively on this one to create the perfect fit and get rid of the mesh. Hand pieced and hand stitched lace plus a bit of something blue for another beautiful hockey loving pair!! Sorry Stef for the anxiety of watching your dressmaker go down on the hockey field and be taken away in an ambulance a few weeks before your wedding dress was meant to be finished!! We got there in the end and you were a beautiful bride!!

Thought it was about time I got my page up to date with a couple of beautiful brides from this year!
So pleased to have been asked to create a dream dress for Jacqui when she married Nick in March. A simple, elegant chiffon over satin gown with a fully hand pieced and hand stitched bodice sprinkled with sequins and a unique crossover back. A perfect dress for my hockey coach and team mate (now also my physio in charge of getting me back on the field next year with a good as new hammy!!)
