A seventeenth-century painted vault. Water damage, soot, decades of decay. The kind of ceiling most people would look at and think: start over.

Nathalie Scipioni didn't. Working on this UNESCO-listed restoration in France, she and her team made a deliberate choice — conserve what remained of the original work, but don't recreate what was lost. Filling in the missing sections to look "original" would have created a false historical record. So the losses stayed visible, and only what could be authentically restored, was.

It's a philosophy she says doesn't always translate to Australia. On one local project, Nathalie was asked to design a newbuilding to visually imitate a traditional bungalow, simply because of its heritage setting — the kind of request that wouldn't happen under the French approach, where new work is expected to honestly read as new, not dressed up as old.

With nearly 30 years across both systems — heritage training at the École de Chaillot in Paris, work on sites including Place Stanislas in Nancy, and major Australian projects including Carriageworks and Sydney Town Hall — Nathalie makes the case that recreating the past isn't the same as respecting it.

As part of the OFFSITE26 CPD workshop, Daniel Jakobs, Technical Systems and Solutions Lead for Pro Clima Australia, shared his insights on the difference between achieving a performance rating on paper and delivering that performance in practice.

Drawing on more than 25 years of experience in high-performance and ecological building, Daniel explored how a simple wall system can deliver real-world performance beyond what a rating alone may suggest.

His presentation highlighted the importance of practical construction, weatherproofing and airtightness in achieving high-performance outcomes.

Thank you, Daniel, for sharing your expertise and practical insights with the OFFSITE26 community.

As part of the OFFSITE26 CPD workshop, Charles Boyce, Passive Fire and Compliance Manager at Jensen Hughes, and Steve Huxham M.AIRAH, National Facade BDM at FIREFLY AU, shared their expertise on two important considerations for modular construction: passive fire compliance and BAL ratings.

Drawing on decades of experience across passive fire protection, modular construction, insulation, fireproofing and waterproofing, Charles and Steve explored the practical considerations around fire compliance and BAL ratings in modular construction.

Thank you, Charles and Steve, for sharing your knowledge and contributing valuable insights to the OFFSITE2026 program.

Would you trust a building material you couldn't test for a hundred years? Off-Earth architects don't have a choice.

That's the challenge at the centre of "The Next Architectural Revolution Won't Happen on Earth," this month's feature in The Link by Dr Giuseppe Calabrese — architect, researcher, and space architecture specialist.

This isn't a piece about science fiction. It's about what happens when architects are forced to solve the same problems we already face here — material scarcity, extreme environments, long-term resilience — with none of the safety nets.

🎓 Read it and you'll come away understanding:

→ How in-situ resource construction (building with what's already there) is reshaping ideas about sustainable design on Earth
→ What ancient earthen architecture — think Petra, Matera, Coober Pedy — has in common with lunar and Martian habitat Design Institute of Australia
→ Why robotic fabrication is becoming central to how the next generation of buildings gets made, on this planet or off it

Whether you're an architect, engineer, builder, or certifier, this is a genuinely different lens on resilience and material efficiency. 💻
