Hi everyone! 👋
We bless you you a wonderful and relaxing weekend! Take some time to rest, recharge your batteries, and we’ll see you back at our shop after the weekend. ☕️☀️
if you are looking for something interesting to read over tour weekend coffee, we’ve prepared a little bit of history about how Op Shops began in Australia (and around the world). 🌍📜
Did you know that the term "Op Shop" is a uniquely Australian invention? It all started in Melbourne back in 1925. It was coined by Lady Millie Tallis, an Australian actress and philanthropist who opened the first shop to raise funds for medical equipment for a hospital. 🏥🇦🇺
Instead of calling it a "charity store," she used the word Opportunity. She wanted buying second-hand to be seen as a great chance to find something amazing at a good price, rather than something to be ashamed of. The idea was simple: people donate what they no longer need, someone else buys it as an "opportunity," and the money goes toward helping others. 🤝✨
Even before Lady Tallis, organizations like the Salvation Army ran similar spots in the 19th century, but it was in Australia that this specific "treasure hunting" culture we love today was truly born. Over the last 100 years, Op Shops have evolved from small aid points for the needy into today’s hubs for eco-friendly living and unique fashion 👗♻️
Again: Have a great weekend and see you soon! 🌿✨
