As Father’s Day comes to an end…

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads and father figures out there — and thinking especially of those whose dads are no longer here. ❤️

I went to visit my dad this afternoon after work, and I know just how lucky I am to still have him.

So here are a few photos of us through the years — Dad, Mum, my sister Vanessa and me. Funny how an old photograph can take you straight back to another time.

Yesterday’s treasure hunting… 🌿

A little glimpse of some of the things I brought home yesterday.

Apparently I was in the mood for English cottages, flowers and a touch of kitsch — pretty vintage trios, cottage scenes, little ceramic houses, a rather fabulous pair of celery salt and pepper shakers, colourful china and that beautiful smoky blue glass vase.

One of my favourite things about buying for the shop is that I never really know what theme is going to emerge until I unpack everything.

And yesterday, apparently, it was cottage garden meets Grandma’s china cabinet. 💚

Most will be making their way into the shop next week.

Always lovely to see my old friend Alison when she visits from Brisbane — and naturally, a visit to Kitten Vintage involves a good cup of tea!

We met about 15 years ago through the North Mackay Primary School P&C, when our lives seemed to revolve around kids, school events and fundraising.

Fast forward 15 years and somehow we’re now both entrepreneurs — me surrounded by vintage treasures and Alison working on her computer typing program.

Different chapters, same friendship… and still plenty of cups of tea. 🥰

One of my favourite parts of unpacking vintage is seeing completely unrelated pieces suddenly become friends.

Today it’s pale blue Wedgwood Jasperware, a beautiful Coalport Countryware gravy boat, vintage silver plate, sweet little figurines and a rather fabulous heart-shaped candlestick.

Different makers, different decades, different stories — but put them together and somehow they just work.

All freshly unpacked, priced and finding their way into the shop today.

Some rather fabulous vintage glassware has made its way into the shop this week — from bold mid-century colour to pretty pressed glass.

There’s Imperial Glass and Anchor Hocking, gorgeous green glass, quirky serving pieces and candle holders, plus that spectacular ruby-red 1960s Finnish Riihimaki Red Vase by Tamara Aladin
and almost impossible to walk past without noticing!

I love vintage glass for exactly this reason. You don’t need an entire matching collection — one beautiful coloured piece on a shelf, table or windowsill can completely change a room.

Welcome to Grandma’s Kitchen 💚

One of my favourite rooms at Kitten Vintage — our little retro kitchen packed with the useful, colourful and occasionally slightly peculiar things that once filled Australian kitchens.

Canisters, butter dishes, kitchen scales, mixing bowls, storage jars and all sorts of everyday treasures.

This beautiful matching stoneware set was handmade by E. Jones of Mt Isa, with the maker’s name and Mt. Isa inscribed into the base.

Probably dating from around the 1970s, each piece has been hand-thrown and decorated in those wonderfully earthy browns and warm natural tones we associate with Australian studio pottery of the period. The delicate incised grasses and seed heads tie the whole collection together.

The 9-piece set includes a teapot, four mugs, small jug, teaspoon pot and two lidded canisters — remarkably, all still together after around half a century.

And I think that’s what makes this one special. It isn’t factory-made pottery that travelled halfway around the world. It was made by a potter in Mt Isa, Queensland, at a time when regional pottery groups and studios were flourishing around Australia.

A beautiful little piece of North Queensland creative history.

$195 for the complete set.
