Mission Beach - Boomerang Bags

Mission Beach - Boomerang Bags We – The Rainforest School, Mission Beach – have taken over the Mission Beach Boomerang Bags project. We will publish the sewing bee dates on our page.

We are hosting sewing bees at our beautiful little school in the rainforest. We will have coffee, tea, a space to create and big smiles. We can’t do this without you, so please let us know if you would like to be involved. We are always looking for sewers (BYO machine), cutters, screen printers and ironers. We are looking forward to hear from you 🦋

Boomerang Bags is a global not-for-profit grassroots movement and there are now over 800 communities worldwide who participate in the project. Boomerang Bags is about making bags, diverting waste, starting conversations, connecting with each other, fostering sustainable behaviour, and having fun! Volunteers collect and upcycle unwanted material, diverting thousands of kilograms of waste from landfill, and create a platform where communities can connect, socialise, learn new skills and contribute positively to the local community. The bags are then made available to local communities at markets, events and festivals, libraries, schools and businesses to provide sustainable alternatives to plastic, creating conversations about the importance of re-use, caring for our planet and each other and fostering sustainable behaviour.

The Rainforest School and Mission Beach Boomerang Bags are working on a joint project with the Department of Environment and Science and the Yarrabah Art Centre. We are sewing 80 bags for the launch of a new Waste Transfer Station in Yarrabah.

Aunty Philomena Yeatman, a Gunggandji woman, has screen-printed "The Ripple Effect", a beautiful design that represents that water is life, we all need to care for country, each person can make a difference and this difference can have a ripple effect'.

The design has been printed in three colours; blue to represent the ocean, green for the rainforest and red to raise awareness to care for country and be mindful of your waste. These fabrics are being paired with upcycled boomerang bags.

We are looking for people to help us by donating fabric and volunteers to iron and sew. Please get in touch if you would like to get involved. All welcome!

Our next sewing bee is on Saturday the 22nd of July from 9am to midday at The Rainforest School, 18 South Maria Creek Close, Maria Creeks.

It will be a 'buzzing' day with nature inspired activities, dance & music workshops, market stalls and of course coffee, cake & light meals.

You can also join a tour if you would like to find out more about school 🌿
