I bet you’ve heard this one before (insert eye roll). A phrase that’s often used as an excuse or justification around sports, domestic chores and can be associated to more serious issues like being emotionless and violent. This can have really harmful implications for not only the ‘guy’ but society in general.

R**e culture and toxic masculinity are negatively linked. Women are treated as sexual conquests and far too often there is a tendency to place blame on the victim, not the perpetrator. Terms like ‘boys will be boys’ or ‘she was asking for it’ can evolve into excuses for violent behaviour or not respecting boundaries. It further reinforces the patriarchy that still exists today.

Traits of toxic masculinity include, mental and physical ‘toughness’, aggression, stoicism, homophobia, emotional insensitivity, not being a feminist ally… you get the gist.

So, let’s work on dismantling this outdated and damaging notion. We need men to be role models for the next generation.

Most parents want their children to grow up and live a happy, healthy & wholesome life.

We want them to respect, be loving & kind to themselves and others.

Great qualities like these cannot be taught, they need to be experienced, which is why positive role models are so very important.

When a child follows the example of an adult, they will pick up habits and perspectives that could last a lifetime.

So parents, be mindful of everything you do, the way you speak to others… but most importantly how you speak to them. Because you are one of THE biggest guiding lights in your child’s life.

Embrace your FLOW 🌸 Let’s end the stigma around our periods. Did you know that in some parts of the world menstrual exile exists, sending females away from their villages to live in basic huts. Unable to leave, forbidden from touching other people and objects. Children and teenagers miss out on school, and rely on family members to bring them food to eat! Ridiculous right?

My daughter is turning three in September. She knows what a tampon is and where it goes. I also explain what happens every month and why it happens. It’s a one minute conversation, it takes no effort.

Menstruation is a natural process, for some it’s very painful. It’s important to talk about our periods openly and share our experiences and learn. There’s no shame in it.

When my daughter was born, I knew I was going to face some challenges because I wanted to do things a little differently to what was expected. I knew I’d get the eye rolls, the nose scrunch, the looks of questioning. Coming from a European background, a kiss and hug is something that is almost expected when greeting someone. It’s considered a sign of respect, particularly when a child is greeting a family member or a close family friend. But is it really a sign of respect?! I remember the uncomfortable feeling of having to do the same as a kid despite not always wanting to. So now, when my daughter is asked for a hug or kiss, I always assure her that she doesn’t have to if she doesn’t feel like it. We must give respect to our children, respect their personal space and show them that just because we are adults and bigger than them, it doesn’t give us the right to take that choice away from them.

There are girls and women in other parts of the world that aren’t allowed to go to school because of their gender, deemed not worthy of being educated. There are girls having their ge****ls mutilated unjustifiably. There are little girls being forced to marry men that are double and even triple their age. I am VERY grateful that none of these things have happened or will happen to me, or my daughter, or my mother, or my sister, or any female I know. It simply shouldn’t happen to anyone. It’s a violation of human rights!

FEMINISM - the advocacy of women's rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes. Ok, now read that again… EQUALITY of the sexes. Being pro-women, does not mean anti-men. Almost every time I speak up about the inequality and injustices women are faced with, I get an eye roll or a yawn from a man and sometimes even women. So to those who don’t quite get it, please understand feminism and perhaps stop being sexist and riding the patriarchy wave 🤷‍♀️
