When one thinks of cruelty in the fashion industry, it’s fur and leather that immediately comes to mind, not wool, silk and feathers and down. After all, sheep and rabbits are not killed for their wool, and neither are ducks and geese killed for their feathers. But silkworms do die in their cocoons; and sheep, rabbits, ducks and geese are treated thoughtlessly for their wool and feathers.

On the 24th of April, 2013, a tragedy occurred that sparked the flame for the Bangladesh accord. Rana Plaza, a building located in the Dhaka District of Bangladesh that had housed five garment-making factories, collapsed due to negligence and employee censorship resulting in a death toll of 1134, and reportedly over 2500 injuries. Following the tragedy, the Bangladesh Accord on Fire and Building Safety was put in place. Nearly 9 years later, what happened to the agreement? In Australia, people buy roughly 27kg of new textiles a year and discard around 23kg of that, which end up in a landfill. The prevailing attitude is that you can donate what you don’t wear. The consoling thought is that someone else will get to wear the item. Unfortunately that is not so. The truth is, up to 60,000 tonnes of clothes charities receive also end up in landfills.
