Pant hoots and Happy Birthday wishes to Kodua who turns 18-years old today!! She has grown up so fast!

Kodua was only two years old when she left the entertainment world and arrived at the sanctuary. When she first arrived in Wauchula, she was housed with the little chimp Mowgli. She was also introduced to Knuckles and became a wonderful playmate for him.

Kodua’s birth family also came to the sanctuary, and it was important to reunite her with other chimpanzees in her own family. So, at age 3, she was gradually introduced to a group of chimpanzees including her mother (Jessie), aunt (Boma), grandmother (Oopsie), infant brother (Stryker) and honorary uncle (Bubbles). While her mother, Jessie, was very gentle and playful with Kodua, it was her maternal grandmother, Oopsie, who decided immediately to adopt Kodua and raise her as her own infant. A few years later her father (Ripley) arrived at the sanctuary.

Today Kodua continues to live with her family group and they will all be celebrating her birthday later today with special treats.

CGA Orangutan caregiver Keith captured this moment on camera, and artist James Fox perfectly expressed in his work the tenderness of these parents with their baby.

We have a second birthday here at the sanctuary today. Happy 25th Birthday to Noelle! She will celebrate her birthday with her friends Kenya, Mowgli, and Brooks during her party tomorrow.

We've been so busy with holiday decorating that we forgot to announce our first December ...meet orangutan Allie! Allie is one of our "special needs" apes. When she was young she was diagnosed with Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP) which limits the use of her legs and feet, but don't worry she can get around just fine!
