Not your Nana's quilting – Workshop bookings open now!

An introduction to the fundamentals of patchwork using traditional blocks with a modern twist – starting with easy square piecing in week one and moving through to curves in week four.

For those who have some experience making quilts, the course will help you explore your preferred style and give you the confidence to make quilts with or without a pattern, using precision or free-cutting.

Over five weeks we’ll cover fabric and thread selection, creating colour palettes, construction, layout and finishing techniques.

If you’re happy to do some sewing homework, you can easily have a completed quilt top by the end of the course.

Duplicate stitch ✅
It’s when I’m faced with pic 2 that my brain literally shuts down.
I don’t know what it is.
I understand the structure of knitting; I can manage the scaffolding threads; it makes sense in illustrations and watching someone do it in a reel; but about three rows in my brain stops functioning and I hit a wall…
So, odd socks it is 🤣

Last time I taught this, one of the women mentioned that she was taking the class because she had a growing pile of tops and couldn’t justify sending them all to get longarm quilted.

I get it. Quilting isn’t a cheap hobby so sending all your quilts out isn’t always an option.

That’s where walking foot quilting steps in, using the machine you already have. I definitely still send some of my quilts out (madly finishing one for that as I type), but I also like having the flexibility to choose.

Being able to walking foot quilting means I can pick the option I think will suit the top best.

If you’re keen to have these same options I’m teaching next for Bendigo Quilters on Saturday 27 June.

9.30 for 10am start. Finish 4pm.
Address: Long Gully Community Centre

Winter might finally be on its way. I’ve only recently felt the urge to knit – so much later in the season than normal. I read somewhere the other day that they’re predicting Australia won’t experience winter by 2050… It’s not my favourite season but geez we’re making a mess of things hey?

This is my start on River’s Song by (pic 2 with .repost so you can see where I’m headed). I have no idea what the yarn is or where it came from. It’s been in the cupboard for a while and had clearly been undone from some previous project beginning 🤷‍♀️ I weighed it and I think it should be enough🤞🏻

It’s a good knit so far. Easy to get into a rhythm but enough to keep it interesting too.

For the last month of being an we were asked to show off our signature technique. Now, I definitely can’t claim is what I’m known for, but it sure has taken up most of my artisan year!

I’m so close to a flimsy finish here! I have my fingers crossed it will be done by mid next week 🤞🏻

Just a few of those diamond star blocks to go and a few long y-seam rows on the machine and then I’ll be packing her off to 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I always forget just how long it takes to piece a quilt largely by hand 🙄

Well that’s 20+ new curve converts out in the world! Almost all came to the classes in Isaac shire never having sewn a quilt with a curve and by the end they were all whizzing around the bends without a pin in sight!

First up were the Flaggy Rock quilters where I was treated to a morning tea worthy of a CWA tent at a country show. There was a mix of bags, cushions, Tall Poppies, Surfacing and Bloomin’ Lot quilts started by a bunch of very enthusiastic and hard-working quilters. I do hope I get to see some of the finishes!

Next I was inland to Moranbah to see ‘Ahead of the Curve’ hanging in its latest venue – the Coalface Gallery – where it will be until the 19th of June. Then yesterday local quilters of all ages turned out to try their hand at curves. We were in the most palatial of venues and again a great mix of projects got underway, including two throw Bloomin’ Lots, a couple of Surfacing quilts and a cushion made with fabric created with scraps – they looked amazing.

Big thanks to Anne-Marie Loeksow and for making it all happen.

And, if you’re in Melbourne and you’re keen to master curves I’m teaching next weekend (23rd) at Kensington Neighbourhood House – bookings can be made through my website.

From Deniliquin, back to Melbourne for a quick shuffle and then up to Moranbah. That’s 2,400km/1,500 miles this show has got to cover before opening at Coalface Gallery on Friday!

I’m willing it on… I can see it’s got as far as the Far North Queensland sorting facility at the moment 🤞🏻

Big thanks to everyone who has supported the show so far. I’m so excited to have this one going to Queensland ☀️

I’m even more excited that I’ll be following it not too long after opening to teach the accompanying class at Flaggy Rock then two days later at Moranbah. It’s then back to Melbs for the same class at Kensington Neighbourhood House on the 23rd (see my website for the local details).

I’ve sewn a LOT of curves these past couple of years! After what felt like a million 3.5” drunkards paths, I was about to embark on more for the , so to give myself a bit of a change, I decided to take one of the motifs from that quilt and make it HUGE!

Big Blooms is the result. 🌸🌼🌺

And right now she’s hanging out at with a whole lot of curvy quilts in ‘Ahead of the curve’. The second pic is me with at the opening last weekend.

The exhibition is on until the end of January and well worth a visit 👍🏻
