At TRA we convert second hand, used clothes and unwanted commercial textile goods back in to desired, useful textiles products. In doing this we stop many thousands of kilos of potential textile waste from ending up in landfill. At TRA we carefully sort the garments according to commercially acceptable international standards, and then professionally pack and ship them overseas to countrie

Beyond Recycling: Building the Next Value Layer for Textile Waste
 
Most people know Textile Recyclers Group (TRG) for keeping clothing and textiles out of landfill.
That remains at the heart of what we do.
But fewer people know about Textile Recycling Technologies (TRT), our technology division focused on a different question:
 
How can low-value textile waste become the feedstock for high-value, in-demand products?
TRT is investing in novel technologies and new material pathways through collaborations with leading Australian academic institutions, alongside our own in-house R&D.
This includes work in AI and robotics, as well as the development of commercially relevant applications for recovered textiles.
 
One example is VestraForm™, which we are now successfully deploying as a new pathway for transforming textile waste into higher-value material.
 
What makes TRT different is that this work is grounded in real-world operations.
TRG provides the facilities, feedstock and practical experience of recovering textiles at scale.
For us, the future is not simply about diverting more from landfill.
It is about creating greater value from everything we recover.

Textile recycling is bigger than clothing.

This image shows polyester acoustic panel off-cuts. A material stream that has historically been difficult to manage once it becomes production waste.

Textile Recyclers Group is well known for recycling uniforms, workwear and fashion textiles, but our scope continues to expand as we work with manufacturers, designers and the construction sector to find practical pathways for textile-based materials beyond apparel.

Polyester acoustic panels are a good example. They may look very different from a garment, but fundamentally they represent another valuable polyester resource that should not automatically be destined for landfill.

For Textile Recyclers Group, the challenge is increasingly about looking at materials differently:
Can it be recovered?
Can it be processed?
Can it become feedstock for something new?

As new textile-based products enter commercial interiors, building products and manufacturing, the recycling industry needs to evolve with them.
That is exactly where TRG’s role now extends. Beyond textile recycling to textile resource recovery and materials technology.

With so many two-legged visitors stopping by to learn more about TRG’s VestraForm™, it was a privilege to welcome one very special four-legged VIP.
The interest shown throughout the Green Design Hub at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre reinforced the growing demand for practical, locally developed solutions that transform textile waste into valuable new materials.
This visitor may not have asked too many technical questions, but the enthusiasm was unmistakable.
A memorable moment from an inspiring event—and a reminder that good design should create a better future for everyone.

One of the most rewarding aspects of leading the Textile Recyclers Group is collaborating with Australia’s world-class researchers to transform innovative ideas into real-world industrial solutions.
It was a pleasure catching up with Dr David Hinwood at RMIT University’s Advanced Manufacturing and Mechatronics precinct to discuss the next phase of robotics and intelligent automation for resource recovery and material upcycling in circular manufacturing lifecycles.
At Textile Recyclers Group, we increasingly see ourselves not simply as a textile recycler, but as an applied materials science and resource recovery company, developing technologies that support the circular economy.

The Future is in Good Hands!

Great conversations start with real-world experiences.
Last week, Textile Recyclers Group had the pleasure of welcoming a cohort of students from the University School of Fashion and Sustainability Bachelor of Fashion (Sustainability) program to our Melbourne facility.
For us, education is critical to the future of the clothing and textile industry. It’s one thing to learn about circularity and textile waste in the classroom, it’s another to stand inside an active recycling operation and witness the scale, complexity, and opportunity firsthand.
From sorting and processing to discussions on fibre-to-fibre recycling, material reforming, and the challenges facing the industry, these visits help bridge the gap between academia and the real world of recycling.
We strongly encourage greater engagement between industry and educational institutions, because the next generation of designers, innovators, and sustainability leaders will play a vital role in reshaping the future of fashion.

for the excellent work they are doing in developing future-focused sustainability education and creating meaningful industry connections for their students.
