We got up bright and early for a cold, grey Melbourne Sunday to go on one of Nick Heydon’s architectural walking tours.
This one was on the infamous Howard Lawson and the wonderful “glamorous” flats he built along the river in South Yarra from the early 1900’s to the mid 1940’s.
Highly recommended!

ABOUT TIME by JAKE WALKER

I fell in love with Jake Walker’s work back in the Utopian Slumps days. They’re so physical - abstract layers using incredible colours though his black or dark paintings are equally stunning and I love that contrast of moods.

His distinctive ceramic frames really complete them with shape, form and weight but also give each one a persona. They are protected and complete.

In this exhibition, Jake has also explored a new framing technique in Orange Monochrome by making seperate ceramic lengths that appear separate to the work but are somehow attached. It’s beautifully done.

This wonderful show opened yesterday at Station Gallery in South Yarra and continues until September 12.

Test Pieces by Vivienne Binns

This exhibition opened yesterday on the 1st of August at Sutton Gallery and on the same day, Vivienne sadly passed away.

I’m nearly at the end of listening to an audio version of Olivia Laing’s 2016 powerful book called THE LONELY CITY: Adventures in the Art of Being Alone.

This recent recording is read by Tilda Swinton making it wonderful to engage with, reflects on a time when Laing lived in NYC in circumstances not of her choosing. She wrote as a memoir with a lot of reflection on her situation there, but intertwined with fascinating research and observations on artists that lived with chronic loneliness.
I was familiar with the work all of these artists except one, Josh Harris.

Edward Hopper, Andy Warhol,
David Wojnarowicz, Henry Darger, Vivian Maier, Klaus Nomi, Zoe Leonard all made work that I have enjoyed or connected with over time. Some joyful, some incredibly moving, some inspiring but always with some awareness of a particular feeling about them which I recognise as sadness. Sometimes a sadness for them and sometimes a sense sadness in their work.
I realisethat I glimpsed their loneliness and am grateful for whatever their circumstances, they had the ability to share their work with us, ultimately their way of survival.

This exhibition ARE YOU LONELY TONIGHT? I’M SO LONESOME I COULD CRY speaks to this theme. Though we may not have taken those words in that sense when sung by Elvis Presley, the exhibition dips into various interpretations of loneliness though is light and bright enough to walk away with a sense of positive energy.
Showing now at ACCA until August 30.

Début collection for Boloria by Belgian designer, Olivier Theyskens.

It’s great to see him back and with his own brand.

We don’t need more brands but we could afford to lose 1000 bad ones to be replaced by this, a collection of beautiful pieces with intention, not another collection under the banner of a designer that has long since passed.

I’m in love with these skirt suits, naturally!
