Tutu School Woodend 5th - 9th January 2026

We are now booking places for our next Tutu School in beautiful Woodend at the foot of the Macedon ranges in Victoria.
Join Dani Legge (Tutus by Dani) and Barbara Sanders (Attitude Tutus and Stagewear) in early January 2026, for stretch tutu-making, supervised embellishment classes, 2 styles of tiara construction and a half day of advanced techniques. Friday is designed as a free day for students to finish things off or take the half day advanced techniques class. The Friday class will be free for students taking both tutu and embellishment classes.

Classes will be held at the Woodend Bowling Club in Woodend from Monday 5th
to Friday 9thth January 2023. There is easy parking on site, lots of options for lunch and coffee and plenty of accommodation in and around charming Woodend.

Monday 5th to Tuesday 6th
Classes will include small group instruction on how to make a stretch tutu suitable for competition and performance using high quality stretch fabrics and stiff ballet net.

Wednesday 7th
The full day embellishment class will follow the tutu-making classes where you will receive instruction on design principles, supervision of your design and construction and ample time in the afternoon to complete your designs. This is a stand-alone class and perfect for dance mums and dance teachers who need to decorate tutus and other costumes.

Thursday 8th
Tiara-making classes offer instruction in 2 styles of tiara: Dani’s wire frame tiara in the morning and Barbara’s beaded tiara in the afternoon. You may choose one or both classes.

If there is sufficient interest, we may also run a class in Peasant Pas dress construction. This is a one-day class and would suit participants with some experience in making stretch dance costumes. There will be preparation required for this class. Please note that the class has been kept to one day only and time for trimming/ribbon attachment has not been included but we will discuss how to do this at home.

Friday 9th
We are now offering a new class on advanced techniques including deep back inserts, front insert with seam allowance, ruched bodice and variations on skirt construction. Other options may be considered, so please contact us. This will be a half-day class and will require the participants to bring along leotards (in varying stages of construction), your sewing machine and sewing equipment. Further details will be supplied upon application.

For participants who will be undertaking both our January 2026 Tutu-making and Embellishment classes this additional day will be at no cost. You can learn a few advanced techniques and/or finish your tutu or tiara in a relaxed atmosphere.

If you are not taking the advanced class, you are welcome to stay for the whole day to finish your work from earlier in the week and to ask us any other questions. We’ve found this is a lovely way to wind down after a week of focussed work.

The Art of Embellishment with Barbara Sanders and Dani Legge

During the upcoming September School holidays we will be running two one-day classes on the 20th and 21st September.

Come out to the beautiful Volcanic Plains and learn the art of embellishment in my Mortlake Studio. Classes will be limited to 4 participants giving you plenty of one-on-one time with Barbara and Dani.

Learn some of the tricks of the trade as well as the theory behind the "ballet aesthetic" to give you the confidence to create your own designs.

Cost $300 full day (morning/afternoon tea and light lunch provided).

You should bring a completed leotard/bodice (without the skirt attached) and sufficient fabric for a plate, as well as scissors, ruler/tape, pins etc for trim placement. If you have your own body board please bring that.

You can bring your own embellishments or if you're a bit stuck for design ideas there are plenty of trims, appliques and lace here that you can purchase. I also have a huge selection of rhinestones and other gems for purchase for use in the class.

I also have gem-tac glue available for use as well as wax pencils and other tools for gemstone placement.

Please email Barbara at [email protected] for expressions of interest.

Tutu School this year was fully booked. Dani and I had a fabulous (and exhasting) time. We love teaching people who have a strong passion for costume making and design. Our small classes take into consideration different learning styles and that adult student motivation has different needs. We want our students to learn more than a formulaic approach to construction and design and feel empowered to take on new challenges and engage their truly creative selves. Tutu School is more than pins and a pattern. See you again in 2026, but keep an eye out for other classes this year!

Would you like to make a tutu? Do you own a sewing machine? Was the last/only thing you have made a bag in year 9 textiles (or do you know how to sew but find the idea of sewing stretch too daunting to sign up to one of our January classes)? If your answer to all these questions was yes, we have the class for you! Dani Legge of Tutus By Dani and I are offering a basic tutu sewing class 8th to 9th June (Kings Birthday long weekend) in Woodend Victoria. Monday is offered as a “free” day to finish off your tutu. This makes for a lovely unhurried and stress-free long weekend of sewing.

Over two relaxed days you will be guided through cutting out and making a basic leotard, gathering and sewing on five to six layers of net, and tacking the skirt to a classical shape. We will also take you through some basic decorating principles techniques suitable for ballet, and tips to advance your skills in the future.

Cost will be $750 with ALL materials provided to make a tutu with a small “ballet-suitable” bodice decoration fully blinged by Dani and me. You can attend for just two days of instruction if time poor, but Monday is available as a free day to finish off your tutu under our supervision or just chat

Email Dani at [email protected] if you wish to sign up or have questions, or comment below.
