Day 1 of treatment to this poor fella suffering from mange. Day 1 for me also helping WIRES.
We found him on the side of the road yesterday about 3pm. Due to his mange, his eyes are covered in scabs and he can barely see. This is why they have to come out during the day.
The disease make them ferociously hungry and thirsty, but they loose weight. They loose their fur, and at this time of the year, they are in danger of freezing to death.
If you don't know, mange is curable, but if untreated, our wombats only have about 3 months to live.
WIRES volunteers give up months of their own time driving around, searching, treating, paying for fuel, making and building items, just so one of our national treasures has a chance of survival.
Fun fact: Wombats dig burrows which lowers the soil temperature which then improves the soil quality, and protects other species.
90 per cent of wombats have mange.
All it takes is ONE phone call to WIRES or your local wildlife organization, and they can be helped, OR, do what I have and volunteer through WIRES to be trained to save the wombats in your area.
