ABICUS

ABICUS Abicus offers unique fashion, vinyl & more, uniting music & style in Newcastle, since 2000. Their style and sound transcend time, leaving much to aspire to.

Abicus first opened its doors back in 2000 on a quiet Darby St in Cooks Hill, Newcastle. With just a crate of records, a rail of clothing, and a vision to offer unique classics and hard-to-find vinyl titles not easily available locally, the inseparable mix of music and fashion was established from day one. Fast forward 22 years, and our passionate team of 13 staff members has helped us cultivate a

n immense amount of love and respect for the magical place that is Newcastle. We feel incredibly fortunate to be collaborating with some of Australia's most inspiring and prolific designers, musicians, and artists. Beyond our selection of men's & women's apparel and footwear, Abicus is renowned for its specialised vinyl collection, an extensive range of sunglasses, and a diverse offering of music books. We consider icons like Nick Cave, Patti Smith, Stevie Nicks, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix to be vital and influential links between music and fashion. At Abicus, we believe the in-store experience is just as important as our offerings. We're firm believers that the right record, discovered at the right time, can steer your life's journey and become the soundtrack to your most memorable moments. While trends may come and go, quality remains timeless. Simple, essential, and classic styles can be found year-round at Abicus, along with one-off seasonal pieces. Our team is just as enthusiastic about discussing the latest Julia Jacklin record or Rolla's collection as they are about championing the incredible local bars, bakeries, coffee shops, cafes, eateries, galleries, retail stores, parks, beaches, and opportunities that Newcastle has to offer.

We don’t buy for a season.

We buy for years.

The pieces that stay in our wardrobes longest usually have a few things in common. They’re well made. Comfortable. Easy to live with. Better after a few years than they were on day one.

That’s always been part of how we choose what comes into the store.

Thoughtfully. Slowly. For the long haul.

Fugazi Tour Poster, Australia 1997

So this poster for me has always related to both Fugazi ’96 & ’97 Tours… but nothing comes close to the November 1996 show at The Cambridge here in Newcastle. Arguably at the peak of their powers, deep in their Red Medicine Tour. Words cannot describe the vital intensity of the show, this room, this scene, this band. Sweat dripping from the walls, not a square inch of spare floor space. No setlist, all a response to the dynamic of the room. It was a life changing experience for a then 16 year old. (Tim)

Funnily enough 10 years later I would receive a phone call out of the blue from frontman Ian MacKaye direct from the Dischord Records Washington DC office, looking for a local Newcastle connect to book a show for his post Fugazi project The Evens with wife Amy Ferina. The two ended up staying with Tiff & I here in Cooks Hill the night of the show. He told stories of skateboarding with his best friend Henry Rollins as a teenager whilst we ate rockmelon in the courtyard of our terrace here on Laman St. Totally surreal.

We walked down to Darby St, popped into Abicus then by Natural Tucker, he grabbed a bag of dried apricots for the road, we then strolled down to Civic Park for a hang on the lawn by the fountain. Their warmth and presence was really something. Incredibly grounded and sincere humans. Deeply inspiring in fact. An hour later, with a big old bear hug they had packed their van and were on their way to Sydney for the next show. No roadies or tour managers, just Ian & Amy with a set of drums, a Baritone electric guitar, an amp and their own PA. (of which they set-up and operated themselves!) Wild. Talk about DIY.

I shot a half roll of 35mm at that ‘96 Cambridge show... this is one of my fav’s!
