Part 1/2 – What Shoes Work with Straight Leg Jeans? 👖

One thing I keep noticing throughout this series is that there are two really important things to remember:

1. Your personal style and preferences matter most.

Everyone has a different style and a different picture in their head of the look they’re trying to achieve. What feels stylish to one person may not feel right to someone else, and that’s completely okay.

My biggest recommendation is to try your shoes with all of your different bottoms. Pay attention to what you love and, more importantly, why you love it. Hopefully this series helps you understand the little details that make an outfit work.

2. Pay attention to how much of the shoe you can see.

This is one of the easiest ways to assess whether the proportions are working.

* With a pointed shoe or heeled boot, it can look really beautiful to just see the very end of the shoe peeking out.
* Most of the time, though, straight leg jeans look best when you can see at least part of the shoe rather than having the jeans completely cover it.
* With round-toe shoes, I generally recommend showing most of the shoe, as this creates a more balanced and flattering look.

Remember, there isn’t one “right” answer — it’s all about finding the proportions and styling that feel best to you.

Part 2 of the barrel leg jeans conversation, but this time we’re looking at a slightly different barrel-leg silhouette. 👖

With a longer, straighter barrel leg, one of the biggest things to consider is where the hem sits in relation to your shoe. If the jeans are pooling too much, or sitting too close to the top of the shoe, they can hide the shape of your ankle and lose some of that flattering barrel-leg shape.

You may find you need to cuff them slightly or have them hemmed to get the proportions just right. 👌🏾

When it comes to boots, I found this style looked best when the jeans sat a few centimetres over the top of the boot, particularly with ankle boots. Whether the boot is pointed or rounded at the toe isn’t as important as getting the length of the jean right.

I do think this longer barrel-leg style is a little more versatile for winter, especially if you love wearing boots, compared to a cropped barrel leg. ❄️

Part 2 of “Becky, what shoes do I wear with these pants?” 👖

Today we’re talking barrel-leg jeans.

I was pleasantly surprised by how many shoe options I already had in my wardrobe that worked with these jeans.

Key Considerations ❗️

One of the first things to consider is the length of your barrel-leg jeans:

* Are they cropped or full length?
* Where do they finish on your ankle?

This can make a big difference to which shoe styles work best.

I do think full-length barrel-leg jeans tend to be more versatile in winter, especially with boots. 👢

Cropped versions can still work beautifully, but you’ll need to pay a little more attention to where the jean finishes and where the boot begins.

What I really love about barrel-leg jeans is that they taper back in at the ankle. 👏🏽

Similar to straight-leg or skinny jeans, this means more of the foot is visible, which gives you plenty of shoe options.

Shoe Pairings 👟

They pair beautifully with:

* Ballet flats
* Loafers
* Ankle-hugging boots

Ideally, you want the hem of the jean to sit just over the top of the shoe or boot rather than bunching or catching.

One of my favourite options is a sock boot with a slightly pointed toe.

It’s such a versatile style that works with so many different pant shapes, and barrel-leg jeans are no exception.

Styling Tip ⬇️

Because the jean narrows at the ankle, it’s usually best to keep your footwear relatively streamlined rather than overly chunky.

Your Turn ☝🏽

Were you surprised by how many shoes worked with them?

Is there a particular shoe style you’re struggling to wear with your barrel-leg jeans?

One of the biggest questions I get asked in winter is… what shoes actually work with what pants? 👟

Today we’re talking about full-length straight-leg to wide-leg tailored pants.

When you’re choosing a shoe, I’d be looking for the top of the shoe to be visible underneath the pant. You want the front of the shoe to peek through, with the hem sitting nice and flush to the floor without bunching up.

Whether it’s a ballet flat, loafer, sneaker or boot, this simple tip can make a huge difference to how polished your outfit looks when wearing this cut of pant.

Of course, these are general guidelines only. A cropped tailored pant would be styled differently, and there will always be exceptions depending on the look you’re trying to create.

Over the next few weeks, I’m taking you through all the different pant and jean styles including:

✔️ Straight-leg jeans 👖
✔️ Wide-leg jeans
✔️ Barrel-leg jeans
✔️ Cropped pants
✔️ Tailored pants
✔️ Boots, flats, loafers and sneakers 👢

We’ll work out together exactly what shoes work best with each style.

I’m currently updating my own winter shoe collection, so follow along as I take you behind the scenes and hopefully make getting dressed this winter a whole lot easier.

Save 🛟 this one for next time you’re standing in front of the mirror wondering if your shoes are working with your pants and follow along to join the journey ☺️
