We have being MIA for a quite sometime lots of things happened but today we needed to spread the word about Diabetes, particularly Type 1 diabetes . November is diabetes awareness month and today is world diabetes day and this year theme is access to diabetes education and I am finally ready to talk about it. Last year on 25th of November Valentina was diagnosed with DM1 and our lives changed forever. In case you don’t know, Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system is activated to destroy the cells in the pancreas which produce insulin. We do not know what causes this autoimmune reaction. There is no cure and it cannot be prevented. Valentina when was diagnosed with DM1 she already presented the symptoms of Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) a serious complication of diabetes that can be life-threatening. DKA develops when your body doesn’t have enough insulin to allow blood sugar into your cells for use as energy. Instead, your liver breaks down fat for fuel, a process that produces acids called ketones. When too many ketones are produced too fast, they can build up to dangerous levels in your body. Lucky she was treated on time. Were five days at the hospital and the worse days of our lives. So much to learn in a short period of time. It was overwhelming but the team of were amazing and we are so grateful to be in Australia and have access for a treatment without bureaucracy and information which unfortunately is not a reality for many people around the world. i just hope that in the future this scenario is changed and people have access a free treatment and information. I have also tag some amazing professionals that I follow here.
