ITS NEARLY XMAS: I'm here looking out the window of my sewing studio finishing the last alteration for the year. At this time every year I love to see the Tipuana Tipu trees in full flower and the Orange Blossoms are filling the air with their beautiful fragrance just in time for the festive season. The birds are are frolicking in the trees and the bees are loving the flowers. My studio is definitely my happy place.
I would like to thank all my customers for their wonderful support this year, your business is much appreciated. I wish you all the very best for the festive season, please take care on the roads if you are travelling. Stitch or Two is now closed until 6th January 2026.

IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN! I have been very busy here at Stitch or Two, so much so that I need to temporarily close my books. With so many functions happening at this time of year I have been inundated with alterations. Thank you to may customers who have contacted me, pre booking their alterations it is a big help. It enables me to organise my schedule and plan ahead.
I will take this opportunity to remind customers that I operate my business by appointment only. Please don't hesitate to message or email me with your enquiries. Thank you.

ITS TIME: After much deliberation I have decided to discontinue altering bridal gowns and all formal wear. I would like to thank all the brides, bridesmaids and the young ladies with ball gowns who have trusted me to alter their gowns. Whilst it was stressful at times, to see your smiles at the final fitting made it all worthwhile and I felt honoured to play a small part in your special day. 🩷
I will continue to alter and mend casual clothes, uniforms and workwear with recycling and upcycling of clothes being of particular interest to me.

FROM LACE TO HI VIS: Happy New Year to you all, 2025 has certainly started with quite a variety of jobs. I have just finished altering a wedding gown when I was asked by a FIFO worker if I could do some repairs to his work clothes? I am happy to mend or alter work clothes. I do ask that the clothes are thoroughly washed first though. I do have a beautiful old machine I use specifically for these jobs. For the FIFO out workers I will do my best to work within your swing.
Thankyou to my son, Nathan (left) and his friend Aaron for being my models for this post. Looks like Nathan Hi Vis strips on his pants might need replacing!!

MERRY XMAS: What a busy year it has been here at Stitch or Two.
Thank you to all of my customers for your support.
It has been great to see so many of you embracing upcycling. I have made skirts and tops from dresses, shorts from pants and even a skirt from shorts.
I have several customers who are doing so well with their weight loss program that I have been down sizing some of their garments whilst they make their way towards their goal weight. Well done.
Stitch or Two is now closed until 8th January 2025.

HOW TIME IS FLYING BY: It is only seven weeks until Xmas, what a scary thought! If you have outfits for the festive season that require altering or mending please dont leave it until the last minute. MEND IT, DON’T BIN IT: I was asked by a young lady if I could fix her dress. The knitted elastic finish on this strapless dress had unravelled which in turn caused a ‘ladder’ in the fabric. I was able to trim the edge and then to ‘reknit’ the ladder. I applied a folded elastic finish to back
edge. By all accounts my young customer is getting a lot of wear from her dress.
Think twice about ‘binning’ an outfit. Can it be mended or remodeled?
My Motto’ : Love it, Mend it or Change it!
I will be back in my studio as of 7th October.

IT IS JUST A HEM! I am often asked what I charge to take up a hem. I am hesitant to quote until I have seen the garment as the style, the fabric and the original hem technique all contribute to the time it takes.
Here are two examples -
Firstly the dress had buttoned side vents with a faced hem. To take up the hem of this dress required several of the buttons and the rouleau loops to be removed and the hem facing to be unpicked. The skirt was then cut to the required length. The facing also had to be shortened and then rejoined to the vent facing. The facing was then stitched back onto the dress.
The second example was a shirt that required taking up but had a bias binding finish that continued into the side seam. The bias hem was unpicked well up into the side seam. The shirt was shortened and the bias finish was joined to the side seam and then the bias binding was stitched back onto the shirt creating a hem as per the original finish.
Hopefully this will help you to understand that at times an alteration is not as straightforward as you may think and the reason why the cost may vary.

CIRCLE OF LIFE: It has been quite awhile since I last posted. A lot has happened in that time. My father-in-law, John Watson passed away in October after a long illness.
In January our youngest daughter Hayley married her fiance Ben at Frogmore Winery just out of Hobart. It was a wonderful day. After the wedding we did an eight day whirlwind tour of Tasmania. What a beautiful state.
We no sooner got home and we welcomed our second grandie, Oscar John Watson a little brother for Lockie.
Stitch or Two continued to be busy during this time. Thank you to my customers for their patience when things became a bit chaotic. I continue to keep very busy to the point of now having a waiting list. I will be taking a break in June as it is that time again for my sewing machines and overlockers to be serviced.
