Every fabric design starts in my sketchbook... I draw, scan, draw again as vector graphics, colour with hand painted textures, work out seamless repeats and put it all together...

Then, when the fabric is printed, I cut, interface, sew and finish.

This is a little snippet of how my red bush apple design happened - and some of the places it ended up.

Red bush apple - Rose red

Snow white flowers, rose red fruit... that’s the red bush of apple of the Top End. The flowers start appearing in July and the trees fruit from October through to February.

The edible fruits can be consumed raw and when cooked the juice has been used as a traditional remedy for sore throats, coughs and congestion. The leaves can be brewed into a tea to treat upset stomachs or heated and applied to wounds to contain bleeding and slow swelling. They can be used in jams and for flavouring. They’re also bird and butterfly attracting and an excellent screening plant. An all-round top Top-End winner!

Who doesn’t love the sound of a magpie?

The Australian magpie is one of the most loved birds in Australia, despite their tendency to swoop while nesting. They’re also among the most commonly seen. In the 2025 BirdLife Australia BirdLifeOz Urban Birds Program backyard bird count, one in two of 64,000 participants reported seeing a magpie.

The only places in Australia that they don’t live are Cape York and the Top End, meaning I miss out on hearing the fabulous warble of the magpie. Their cousin, the butcherbird, gives it a red hot go for me but doesn’t quite cut it against the magpie, whose song is one of the most complex in the world, spanning four octaves. The magpie’s Latin name (Gymnorhina tibicen) translates to “bare-nosed flute player”.

Magpies can recognise up to 100 faces. So be nice people! They’re more likely to swoop if you’ve given them cause not to trust you in the past. They remember you…!

They also remember the houses that give them nice treats and anecdotal evidence suggests that they are able to pass that valuable information along to the next generation.

I’m a born and bred South Australian, despite living in the Top End for 17 years. So, I just had to add a magpie to my fabric design flock. I love going home for a visit and hearing their gorgeous warble. It immediately grounds me in the wilds of my childhood.

Does the magpie – or another bird – call bring back memories for you too?

Does your bag or purse ever need a wash?
My customers often get in touch to ask me if they can wash their bags. Because, let’s face it, anything you use often will get a bit dirty eventually. You don’t have to be my good friend Ima Grub for that to happen!
bip bop boo bags and purses are made from sturdy, washable upholstery fabric so you can wash them with confidence. Just do it by hand - don’t put them in the machine. Don’t be afraid to get the fabric really wet. Drain the excess water out (don’t squeeze) and put your bag or purse on a clean towel in the shade to dry. Chances are, it will take a while to dry completely, as they have a thick internal layer of interfacing that gives them their shape.

Who loves drying dishes?
(oh, the silence is deafening!)

It’s one of those things isn’t it... just has to be done. Even if you’ve got a dishwasher a tea towel is a handy thing to have around, even if it’s just for winding up and thwacking people on the bum (not hard, mind, don’t be mean!).
I’ve been in the tea towel business for 15 years and it’s taken some time and lots of testing to find just the right fabric for a super absorbent tea towel that prints with great colour and washes well. But, I got there and these 100% linen tea towels do exactly what they’re designed for and bring a bit of colour and fun to the kitchen too. Yay!

Speaking of fun, if you’ve got a better tea towel joke, I’m all ears...

Actually, I’m up for any jokes at all. Leave me a joke. C’mon, share!

I was delighted to be asked to make scarves for the Darwin chapter of the CWA to wear on a recent trip for an international gathering in Canada.
The women chose my Sturt's Desert Rose design, because that is the floral emblem of the Northern Territory. I recoloured the background for them and added their logo to the scarves, turning them into not only an identifier, but also a keepsake.

I used to see these flowers often when I lived in remote Central Australia and was so pleased to see them in flower last spring when I drove from Darwin to Adelaide.
This design is actually a coordinate for my Ned Kelly print (which is a whole other story). Inside my Ned Kelly skull purses, you'll find one of the colourways of this print. I chose to use this flower for Ned's sugar skull eyes, which makes no sense given he lived in Victoria, but who says I have to make sense all the time?

Other pics include the actual flower (taken on my journey last year), some colour options and Ned himself.

Monday again already?
Where did the weekend go?
Saturday is a blur, but Sunday, we planted trees. Some tropical fruit trees and some native trees. I’m so looking forward to seeing them settle in and start to grow.

In honour of our new trees, I decided to share a bunch of my tree-inspired designs today. There are lots of additional designs that include birds and the trees they frequent, but today it’s all about the trees.

Included in this batch you’ll find the native quinine, sandpaper fig, boab, native peanut, beach hibiscus, native nutmeg, callistemon, river red gum, beauty leaf or tamanu, woollybutt, red bush apple, banksia, an unidentified seedpod and a very old design called ‘The Avenues’ that I did when I was first starting out doing fabric design on my desktop. Which ones can you pick? And does anyone have any clues about my random seedpod? I’ve still got the seedpod and I can’t even remember where I found it.

Happy weekend!

It’s been a long time since I’ve done a meet-the-maker post, so I thought I’d check in and introduce myself.

I’m Boo, the designer & maker behind bip bop boo.

I live on a bush block south of Darwin with my partner, my son & my Tibetan spaniel, Tashi. He looks like a show dog, but he’s actually a bush dog & loves chasing wallabies (naughty thing) & rolling in the dirt.

When I’m not sewing & designing, I’m trying my hand at tropical food gardening. I love birds & keep my binoculars handy when I’m sitting on my verandah. Now the dry season has come, our giant frog pond attracts all kinds of birds so I can bird watch from the couch!

Other fun random facts: I grew up on a farm in South Australia. I worked for the tax office in Sydney for two years … I made stuff & sold it at markets to stay sane. I was one of the first stallholders at Glebe Market when it started. I lived for a year in a bush hut with no electricity or running water in northern NSW while studying fabric printing & design. I did my homework by candlelight. I am a big fan of Australian punk (Royal Headache & Peep Tempel are two current faves) & my (no longer) secret mission this year is to learn to cook with okra so well that all my friends who say ‘yuck, okra!’ will have to stop saying ‘yuck, okra!’. (All hot tips & recipes welcomed!)

I’ve been an artist & a writer since I got hold of a pencil. Designing is my favourite thing to do.

Podcasts & audiobooks keep me sane when I’m sewing for days on end. (Favourite audiobook of all time: Vernon God Little by DBC Pierre.)

After I’ve designed a new pattern, I have lots of fun coming up with a name & writing a description. Of all the things I make, clutch purses are the most fun & rewarding.

My idea of winding down is putting my feet up at night & getting out the embroidery thread & felt, making brooches. It’s quite meditative & allows me to just play with colour & form without any pressure.

So that’s a bit about me. Tell me something about you in the comments, if you feel so inclined! I love meeting new people, which doesn’t happen much way out here in the sticks, so I’d be delighted to say hello.
