An 'avarca' is a protected term — much like Ch*****ne can only come from Ch*****ne. The Island Government of Menorca developed a certified standard, so a shoe can only carry that name if it meets it. That's what you're getting: the real thing, not just the look of it.

Followers will remember I mentioned some feet issues while I was in Menorca. Four months, a lot of appointments, and more tests than I can count later — I finally have an answer: rheumatoid arthritis, and this is basically how I feel about the whole thing. 🖕

Despite the pain, I still wore my Avarcas the whole time I was away. The saddest part came after I got home, when I had to take a break from them altogether and wear firm, rigid shoes instead. The exact opposite of everything Avarcas stands for.

The good news? I'm about 90% back in them now. Thankfully, being winter means some days my feet need covering, so it's not every day, but most days, it's Avarcas, and that feels like getting a piece of myself back.

Thank you to everyone who's messaged asking how I'm doing since Menorca.

Meet Nayara 🤍 Nayara

Local to Ciutadella, and an absolute natural in front of the camera. I found her on Instagram before the trip and asked if she'd be up for modelling; no hesitation, just an immediate yes. Outfit changes in the middle of the street, scrambling up rocks, nearly getting blown into the ocean at one point... she was an absolute legend the whole shoot.

And behind the camera Mallorca & Menorca Wedding photographer, who shot my very first shoot on the island years ago. Getting to work with her again after all this time was genuinely special.

You'll see a lot of both their work over the next little while. I mean — GORG. Can you blame me?

I don’t drink.

Like… at all. 😂

In fact, before our recent trip to Menorca, the last alcoholic drink I’d had was 8 years ago.

The drink? A Pomada.
The location? Menorca. 🇪🇸🍋

So naturally, within minutes of arriving at our first hotel, I was handed an icy cold Pomada at reception.

I’m a sucker for anything lemon, so obviously I couldn’t say no.

Then I got a little cocky and ordered another one from the bar.

BIG mistake. 😂

Apparently Menorca is the only place that can convince me to drink — and that whopping Pomada contained enough gin to see me through until approximately 2034.

But there’s actually a fascinating story behind Menorca’s famous gin + lemonade drink, and it’s so entwined with the culture of the island that I thought it deserved a revisit on the blog.

Hi, I'm Nae. Back to juggling another ball — looking after socials myself now that the irreplaceable Marissa, who made socials so fun and fresh for so long, has headed off in a new direction for her career.
Big shoes to fill (pun very much intended). Fair warning: I'm going to forget to post a lot, but done is better than perfect.
