The story of Bingata Creations
My love of Okinawan fabrics started way back in about 2013 when I visited Okinawa for the first time.
I purchased some fabric and kept it for a while, not sure what to do with it!
When my Okinawan Band Kijimuna – Spirit of Okinawa started in 2014,
I made the uniforms using some of the fabric.
I started making small items such as drawstring bags using the leftover fabric scraps, and my hobby began….
During COVID it became impossible to get fabric from Okinawa, and my friends who usually brought fabric for me couldn’t visit. I used every tiny scrap of fabric.
At the same time I was diagnosed with a serious cancer, so my hobby became a recovery project during my many months of recuperation.
Finally in 2024 I was able to visit Okinawa again and purchase more beautiful fabric.
My handmade items are not perfect – I still have peripheral neuropathy in my fingertips, but they are made with a lot of love and perseverance.
I only sell to friends and at Japanese festivals.
This year I’ve created a collection of low cost (most items under $5) for kids to buy as Mothers Day gifts as well as my usual selection of around
30 different items.
Please come and find me at Perth Japan Festival 15th March at Supreme Court Gardens
