I love the idea of wearing an heirloom that would otherwise be in storage. Our grandmothers and great grandmothers were often incredibly skilled at sewing, crocheting, quilting and the like. So much time and effort was put into these beautiful pieces. Many of us cherish our heirlooms and use them for the purpose they were made for, but more often than not they are put away in storage boxes or given to thrift stores.
If you have an heirloom quilt or blanket of some kind that has meaning to you, but that you find yourself storing away instead of using for its purpose, then perhaps you might consider turning it into a coat or an item of clothing that can be worn with love and pride. Then each time you wear it, it’s like having a hug from your loved one who originally made it. And each time you wear it, it allows you to tell others all about your loved one so they can live on even more vibrantly through conversation.
When I cut into quilts like this beauty, I make sure you use as much of it as possible. Even the smallest leftover pieces will become something beautiful.
