I love seeing a children smile, learn and enjoy a new experience.
While working in kindergartens and being involved in community theatre, I realised how special a piece of fabric and the skill of sewing could become to children. In kinder it varied the children’s play with how that fabric looked and felt, and sewn. There is so much that can be made with fabric and stitches as a base. It can be a part of the kindergarten room set up, an art piece, a piece of clothing, a toy, a comfort object, a fundraiser or anything you can imagine. It could bring a different interest to each and every child and adult. Items need to be sewn with strength and durability, and this takes a skill level that so few people have today. So, Sewing for the Kids is now here to help for all the kinder enviroment.
It is great that children are becoming interested into sewing again as we see children classes increasing in need. It would be even better to see this interest developing from the earliest age possible. My Mum was always sewing something, it was a skill that I watched and assumed all children would know. My brothers, sister and I all sewed. It was a necessity to have cheap, well made items that we couldn’t otherwise have afforded. It was also a way to reuse and recycle what we already had.
In the theatre, even the shyest of children find their confidence in a costume. To walk on stage as someone other than themselves and to be confident that they looked the part. It can bring out the silliness, the pride, a happiness, a concentration, an imagination, a development of ideas,an understanding of their character and most of all, some fun. The part of a group, a team that makes the audience cheer in excitement for a job well done. Also, so many children help back stage with costume co-ordinating, sewing and set building .A place where all children, with all needs, could find a place they belong. A clever director can put in the right person in a place. A character comes to life by a great costume, it can make the experience to be a wonderful part and memory in their lives. It took a back stage job as a costume designer, maker and teacher for me to find my place, my confidence is behind the curtain and helping others.
