Happy Mother’s Day Mumma! 🌸💕

I hope you’ve had a great day celebrating with your loved ones and reflecting on the wonderful job that you are doing as a Mumma.

Today I’ve found myself looking back on my motherhood journey so far and what an adventure it’s been. I really do feel very blessed. From becoming a Mum for the very first time (16 years ago although it definitely doesn’t feel that long ago) and being blessed with 6 happy and healthy children since then. All of our children have taught me so much and it never stops amazing me just how each and every one of them are all so different in their own special way!

As busy as my days are (and as tired and as grumpy as I get at times) I wouldn’t swap my motherhood journey for anything. It really has made me who I am today.
Some of my favourite parts of motherhood include seeing our children for that first hug of the day, when they tell you how much they love you or just give you a kiss out of the blue, hearing their innocent giggles and belly laughs, when they pick you a flower (which may even be a w**d 😂) and give it to you and those times when no one else will do and they only want their Mumma! Motherhood really is made up of so many beautiful moments.

People ask me if having 6 kids is the hardest thing I’ve ever done and my answer might surprise you! 😅 The hardest thing I've ever done (if I'm being honest) would be starting up my own business with very little (or no) previous experience at all.

Being a small business owner is hard, like really hard! You're playing a million roles and in my case are usually a ‘jack of all trades and a master of none’. Often learning on the job as you go as best as you can! With a background in Maternal Child and Health Nursing rather than fashion design, manufacturing, or marketing, it’s been the biggest learning curve I’ve experienced in life yet. 📈

Other challenges of starting up and running my own business include navigating unexpected challenges, accepting that there are many things that are out of my control e.g., manufacturing timelines, achieving work-life balance - juggling the running of my business, as well as looking after our 6 children and helping my husband on our family farm when I can. Constantly trying to stay positive and believe in myself can also be challenging. (Self-belief has never been one of my strong points!😉) Successfully navigating these challenges requires adaptability, problem-solving skills, and the need to think creatively often under pressure. 💪

When I first started out I had nothing more than a strong desire and fire in my belly to design matching sets of comfortable but beautiful underwear that make other Mummas feel their very best. I literally started by googling 'how to get your product made’ and then one thing led to another and has led me to where I am today.

As hard as it is at times (and there have even been times where I’ve seriously thought about giving it all away) there is just something that keeps me going. One of the biggest things that gives me so much satisfaction and keeps me striving is when I receive orders (both from new and returning customers) as well as positive feedback that I’ve made a Mumma feel beautiful in her own skin. 🥰

I often get asked if I knew back then what I know now would I still have done it. While some days the answer would be a ‘heck no’ the majority of days it’s a ‘I sure would’! I really have learnt so much throughout my business journey. Not only business-wise but also on a personal level and how my journey has made me the person, wife, and Mum I am today. I don’t have any regrets about starting my business because even on my hardest days, I know I won’t die wondering ‘what may have been’. So as hard as starting up your own business is, if you’ve got a strong passion and desire and are totally committed then I’d say 'give it a go'! 💼✨

When I think back to the very early days of starting up my own brand, I realise now that I actually had a lot of ideas already in place.

One important point of difference for Matchy Mumma was creating nursing underwear that was beautiful as well as functional.

I’ve always been drawn to floral prints and so I knew that I wanted to base my Matchy Mumma collections on floral designs.

I could have chosen a ready made floral design, however I wanted something different and special. Something that would be exclusive to Matchy Mumma and available nowhere else.

I also wanted to tie my floral designs back to my local area and so the idea of asking visual artist, Belinda Eckermann to design these prints came about.

Belinda is one talented artist and so I was excited when she agreed to design the floral prints for me.

Although it was a challenge to convey the vision in my mind to Belinda, thankfully she managed to interpret and deliver a design that exceeded my expectations and for that I’ll be forever grateful.

These past few days at the Wimmera Machinery Field Days have been a celebration of connection, collaboration, and the incredible power of women supporting each other in business.
