Fifty years ago my dad, Lance, was offered a business to buy while he was watching a local footy game at McKittrick Park, (just down the street.)
Nobody can remember who won that game, (hopefully South Grafton!), but the next day after looking over the shop he agreed to enter the "rag trade." The shop's stock consisted entirely of factory offcuts and "surplus" materials. Not even any sewing threads back then.
Well a lot has changed over the following 50 years.
My involvement is well over the 40 year mark now.
The June long weekend in 2008 saw a big change when we moved the business to the much bigger premises we are in now. This allowed Kay McPhee to run classes in store and greatly increase our ranges.
So, after 16 years in our bigger store it's time for another change.
A new owner, Brooke, will take over on Tuesday 11th June and put some new life into the business.
I am so grateful to everyone who has been a part of my working life at this shop. The thousands of customers, the great staff, suppliers, tradies, other shop owners, ... the list is endless. I have always felt very fortunate to have such a wonderful lifestyle.
My official last day will be 10th June, (public holiday Monday), and interestingly enough that is my dad's birthday, so I guess on that day I will be remembering him .... and the day he bought a Rag Shop at a footy game.
